Wastegate chatter is normally found in the General Technical forum.

"wastegate chatter" is not normally the wastegate. it is usually boost that is left over when the throttle is closed (e.g. change gear) that cannot enter the combustion chamber so it forces its way back past the turbine blades - giving the "chatter". if you run high enough boost this can have a negative effect on lifespan of the turbo.

the wastegate is a bypass valve that allows exhaust gas down the exhaust rather than through the turbine blades. therefore it limits boost pressure.

If the Turbo is the Original it will be fitted with an internal wastegate as standard

Cheers

Hi there.

I've only come accross the idea of a wastgate over the weekend (forgive me since I'm still learning abouth these things . I got curious about them since I saw an advert for the Turbosmart wastegate in a mag the other day.

What potential probs could you encounter by changing the standard wastegate with, say, a Turbosmart one? How easy are they to fit/change? How noticeable is the 'chatter' noise you get from the TS wastgate?

Since I know very little about these, I'm not in the process of wanting to change mine, I just like to find out how things work under the hood.

later
Jas.

if you want "wastegate chatter" which as mentioned earlier is NOT the wastegate then you could try disconnecting the re-circ dump valve. this would force compressed air back through the turbine which DOES give that fluttering noise that you call "wastegate chatter". not sure if this would have any negative effect on the engine tho.

The standard turbo will have an Internal Wastegate - The Turbosmart is an External Wastegate which means to fit to your current setup you would have to modify the Uppipe & Downpipe to fit the external Wastegate plus weld the Internal Wastegate shut. Plus the boost control will need to adjusted to account for new setup.

As already said the fluttering noise is caused by not having a Dump v/v - the air being vented back through the turbo when the throttle closes causes the 'fluttering' sound but over a period of time will possibly be detrimental to the intake compressors life span.

Cheers
