Does the STI 04 model run on 95 unleaded, or does it require a diet of superunleaded? Please, don't answer "Optimax for me.." becuase I am interested to know if it runs well on standard UK petrol.

 

Depends on what colour of Sti you got

 

I have 04 STI PPP and the difference between Optimax and Super is bad let alone 95. Look after her Optmax is a must.



No 95 IS NOT GOOD

 

On a serious note, i always use optimax but was forced the other day to put £10 worth of Ultimate in & it didnt feel right, felt rougher & maybe its me but it didnt pull as well either
95 Ron is a no - no
Also on the petrol cap there is a sticker telling you not to use any less than 98 Ron

If the IM insist on putting them there then it must mean what it says

My MY00 has a sticker inside the filler cap cover which says Super Unleaded only - yet it's quite safe to run the car on 95 RON. I believe the 'Super' warning is for the benefit of European customers in areas where even lower RON values are available.

I normally run on Super anyway - and with PPP there's a major performance benefit - but it's good to be able to run on 95 in an emergency. I've taken the car to places where nothing else is available. What then?

 

Mine says 98 only on the sticker, I wouldn't put in anything but Optimax, or Ultimate for emegancy use.

 

Your car will work on 95 RON. It may be more susceptible to detonation on lower octane fuel, so I wouldn't thrash the t!ts off it.

The demo STI PPP I drove two weeks ago was run on unleaded. No wonder it didn't feel quicker than my RB5

P.S. I've been up in the Scottish hilghlands and used a tank of UL to get me home. If you just drive the car easily (i.e. short shift) then it won't blow-up.

Hm... sounds like carrying a bottle or two of octane booster is in order. Still, I find it hard to believe that a car is sold in the UK (with a special 'type UK' badge stuck on the back, no less!) which actually cannot run without damage on anything but the premium fuel sold by one oil company in a limited area. Subaru's web site states 97 RON for the WR1.

Are we not confusing 'runs without damage' with 'delivers optimum performance'? There's a world of difference between driving home a bit more slowly, and sitting stranded at a petrol station with an empty tank because you've run out of octane booster and don't want a dead engine.

 

all I can say to all 'must be optimax' folks; Do NOT go to the Isle of Man.
There is no optimax (anywhere) nor according to Shell are there any plans to sell it, funny there are are loads of scoobys, evos, m3s, ferraris and the like motoring around!!!!!!!!

It's like asking would a 100 metre sprinter run on curry and chips, yes they would but not very well!

 

The question is not, could they still do 100m in 10 secs, but could they do it at all without collapsing 10m out of the starting block!

 

I used to knock up some serious miles in MY99 commuting from Edinburgh to Crawley on an almost weekly basis. I used to use 95 ron for going up and down the M6 and Optimax at the weekends! Motorway prices on fuel are daft to start with without buying Optimax!

If only the tank range was better than 250 miles

 

If you check the owner's handbook, it's quite clear. 98RON is recommended, anything down to 95RON can be used if 98RON is not available.

So it won't blow up on 95. But my butt tells me that it's a lot more fun with Optimax in there
