Beware! This is a big job if you are using axlestands and trolley jacks!
I invested in a special gearbox stand which can be raised/lowered to move the box. The box is very heavy and awkward and there's not much room under there.
Only other special tool is a clutch alignment tool from Halfords. Get a universal type as the Scooby clutch is not the 'standard' Ford size most people use.
I finished my clutch change this weekend gone, wish I'd paid someone to do it!

Is it not easier to move the engine and leave the box in place? Don't know, just asking - did remove a clutch on the older L series (impreza under the skin) and we moved the engine forward and did it that way.

You will need to remove the gearbox first. Once that's off, taking the clutch off and fitting a new one is relatively easy. The trouble is that taking the 'box off can be a right pig of a job, especially if you don't have the right tools. Clarky1982 recently started a thread on gearbox removal, so suggest you search for that (and other similar resources) to weigh up whether you're up to it before starting to take things to bits.

are the any speical tools needed to do the job,
Good, high axle stands, a low chassis high lift jack with a transmission platform, a clutch alignment tool and something to steady the engine (either an additional jack under the sump or a tie bar to the front bulkhead like the proper Subaru service tool) should be considered the minimum necessary before you start.

Beyond that it's a range of metric sockets and spanners, a pin drift, hammer and miscellaneous other bits and pieces.

When my landrover discovery clutch was replaced the guy doing the work pulled the engine, done the clutch and dropped it back in again, he reckoned it was a lot easier than taking out the gearbox on the "ground" but if you can get the height then do as the above suggest

Taking engine out isn't the quickest way on an Impreza, and of course only possible if you have a hoist.

Phone around!
My Scooby dealer charges about £250 labour, better if you catch him on a quiet week in the workshops!
There are loads of people to do it, find your local man. A decent 'village garage' can do the job too, but the trick on the clutch assy can baffle some (inc me, but I know now!)
If you follow Greasemonkey's advice you won't go far wrong. The Gearbox lift is a MUST, so is the clutch alignment tool! Normal Halford axle stands are too low!
Phone around, it is worth it. Bitch of a job!
