Question Can you tell the difference between a TD04 and TD05 by looking at the engine bay?

I'm off to see a MY 94 WRX wagon tomorrow

The seller says the turbo had failed and has been replaced by a bigger reconditioned one. The guy is a mechanic, did all the work himself but doesnt know exactly what it is, all he knows is that is was the bigger type he got from another WRX.

So I'm assuming its a TD05.

I'm also assuming the map isn't spot on for the turbo also, any implications here?

Thanks

If you look on the lower part of the compressor cover it is printed on it.

Wink

As John has already said the details are at the bottom of the compressor cover shown below.

The map can be tweaked with the addition of a scoobyecu.

Cheers

Update:

Well i bought it, but I don't think its a TD04 or a TD05, the heatshield doesn't fit back on because the actuator arm sits right on top of the turbo (say 12o/c) where IIRC the TD05 is more at the side, say 10o/c.

I couldn't for the life of me find the stamp

Any ideas?

I'll post a pic soon

You won't believe how much I regret selling all that stuff

Now I need to find (which I already had) minimum

KL
AFR
Boost gauge
rear drop links
bumpsteer mod.

That'll do for now, Note to self - this one stays std, this one stays std, this one stays std, this one stays std, this one stays std

VF12 will have a bolt on right angle entry, VF turbos also have the shaft for the wastegate flapper vertically aligned, where the TD04/5 are angles somewhat.

Exclamation

Looks like its a VF10, whatever that is

it reads:

VF10 9003
20 293A

So, does anyone know what it came off and what its spec is?? The guy said it came off an EJ20, its bigger than a TD04 and thats all he knew.

Another thing, looking around the car I noticed the boost control soloniod has the bottom port disconnected!! WTF happening here? The other pipes on the BCS go to the turbo outlet and the wastegate actuator. So is the BCS doing anything or is the turbo boosting to the wastegate threshold?

The car goes well enough, I wouldn't have bought it otherwise, I just wish I'd spotted this earlier

Any ideas?

thanks

VF10 appears to be an old legacy unit from an RS auto.

Found this on nasioc

"The VF-8 and VF12 also use the RHB5 compressor housing, like the 10 and 11, but they have a different exhaust housing. The VF-10 and VF-11 use the P15 housing. The VF-8 uses the P18 (same exhaust housing as a VF-24, VF-28, and VF-29). The VF-12 use the P20 (same housing as a VF-22 or VF-23) and is way more powerful than a TD04."

... To summarise, it might be lacking in ongoing potential....but as you aren't going to mod it, that won't matter

LOL - Steve I saw that same info on Nasoic Also found that in terms of flow the VF10 actually flowed less than the TD04.

Hmmm looks like I've read the same googled hymn sheet

Well the only positive thing to come out of this is at least the TD04 ECU map should be OKish for this.

Looks like my best bet may be to source a RA TD04

Any ideas on the boost control soloniod?

Has it got a dawes type valve, so the solenoid is being bypassed ?

You've looked for the disconnected pipe haven't you ???

The pipe missing from the bottom of the Boost Control Solenoid is the 'bleed' which normally connects to the black resonator at the bottom between MAF and turbo. The boost will control correctly with the pipe disconnected but with the pipe missing from the Resonator and open will allow unmetered air (after MAF) to enter intake which is not ideal.
