Why don't EVO or CAR etc. ever mention the standard WRX. They always test STI's or
UK versions, like the 4x4 challenge EVO issue where the RB5 won. WRX's have got softer
suspension than the STI which really suits our bumpy wet British roads better, but
officially the same power at 276bhp. The best of both worlds then and best Impreza when you take price into consideration?

 

I seem to remember Performance Car, or EVO saying the best on our roads WAS the WRX 4 door saloon, for that very reason...

Or were they comparing 2-door vs. 4-door?

I've got a prodrive handling packed UK MY99, but I'd still like 276BHP !!!!

I haven't read a single review of a WRX tested in the UK.

Actually what is the difference between the STi suspension and the WRX. I know that the WRX has alloy wishbones which the Uk hasn't, is it just stiffer springing on the STi.

Old on, I remeber reading somewhere on this board that STis have Blistein shockers, is this the case.

It was an STI that they were talking about though. They (EVO, CAR etc.) don't seem to know about the standard WRX and have never tested it. I wonder how highly EVO would have rated it in the 4x4 group test?
I'd like to see an MY00 WRX tested against all the other types of Impreza, on UK roads. Surely it's the best when you take price into account (and not far off even if you don't).

Good point about the WRX. Why not write to Evo, Car etc since all mags seem to give prizes to letter writers these days. I should think it would have a good chance of getting published and we might all get to read a review at some point in the future.

I have to agree!

I have a MY95 WRX and it's fantastic on A & B roads. I have wondered about coments saying that WRX's are far stiffer and slower across country than say, a UK car! Well to that I do not agree!

If this is the case of newer ones then i don't want one!

Anybody know the performance specs of the WRX. I know that of the P1, STI and standard UK turbo but dont know for the WRX ?

Depends on the year as the older WRX didnt have 276 bhp some had 240 then 260.

According to the July edition of EVO, IM are putting pressure on subaru japan to have an official WRX with 276bhp as well as the present UK model.

I for one would be be in a rex tomorrow if they are official .

All the info Ive got are from Evo and TG but neither have the standard WRX.

Am collecting a 97 Sti3 later today, I currently have a MY96 std WRX. I have had the WRX for 8 months and am very happy with it (soft sus, performance etc...). I will post what I find immediatley different between the two when I have had a couple of hours in the Sti.
(260 v 280 PS - should be interesting)

When considering my Scooby purchase a couple of years ago (I waited 11 months + 2 weeks for my order to arrive!), I was looking at the import scene too, and decided on a standard WRX 4 door. The STI didn't seem to add much on top, and I knew the suspension may be slighty too firm for where I live.

The only thing that prevented me from buying an import was running it on Super Unleaded, seeing as I was doing 70+ miles per day at the time!

Let's face it guys, we're lucky to have such nice cars. Anything that'll hit 60 in less then 6 seconds is serious. My car is comfortable, quiet on the inside, noisy on the outside (Scoobysport!), fast enough for easy-overtaking, and most of all great fun to drive.

Can't be the power output (on late models) as Stewart W and Penni both have WRXs and don't appear to want for more power.

From rumour in magazines, the head of STI may not have as much influence over new models (he's a petrolhead/motorsport nut) so Subaru may only have a WRX model for the new car, and no STI.
Or as I suspect, they'll have an STI specced model sold as a WRX.

According to the car import magazine, the official (2 passengers etc) 0-60 of the latest WRX is 5.0 secs. I guess a better guidline would be those who have tested non modified WRX and STi versions at a 0-60 trial.

I have a 95 WRX (260PS/255bhp standard, I think) which is fitted with an HKS induction kit, HKS Super Drager exhaust and Mines ECU (came from Japan with these bits fitted).

Even though the ECU was designed for Japanese fuel I have recorded 279bhp/6000rpm and 264lb/ft/4710rpm on the rolling road. Torque is pretty flat from 3500 and 5500rpm.

Does your magazine say want the top speed is of the WRX ? I know its mindless info but Im getting fed with saying "I dont know" when people ask the 0-60 and top speed of my car.

The info must be somewhere.

It does, but as to the accuracy, I don't know.
It gives 0-60 times of 4.6 for the Sti and 5.0 for the std WRX.
And a top speed of 140 for both - which is limited by the gearing, not the power - the type R (or is it RA?) has a top speed of 130 according to the mag, due to lower gearing ratios.

Also, the power of the latest models is 276bhp - but I think that's on 100RON in Japan, and we can only get 98RON.

And... since the book 0-60 of the std UK turbo is 6.4, and Top Gear have it measured as 5.27 (Petrol + 1 passenger wouldn't make over a second difference), you shouldn't take the book speed as gospel.

I've got an MY98 WRX and the top speed isn't limited by the gearing. It's geared to do over 165 mph at 7500rpm (red line)in top. Thats the same gearing as the 4 door STI as demonstrated by a picture in a recent REVS magazine showing the speedo and rev counter on an STI V (which red lines at 8000rpm). The 98 WRX has officially the same power as a new STI, but 20 less torque (240 vs 260) so the performance should be very similar. I reckon very close to 150 mph and 0-60 of 5.0 or less on a good day. I'd like to see a full test though, so I wrote to EVO in the hope they might help. Failing that I might go to Santa Pod or something and test mine which is totally standard (surely someone else out there has done this already for their WRX?).

 

Its bizare that there doesnt seem to be any official figures for the WRX.

That leaves us to what Scoobysnacks is saying. Try it and see.
