URGENT: Erratic idle
Had this happening every now and then over the last couple of weeks. Took the car in for service today and asked them to check it. They said that they cleaned both the Boost Valve and the Idle Valve (both were quite dirty), and ran diagnostics on various sensors (MAF, etc) and everything was ok. They also pointed out that I am using the ITG panel filter. But said that things are fixed now...
On the way back noticed that the problem has got MUCH worse. The revs jump between 0 and 1000 every time I stop. Several times the car almost stalled at roundabouts and junctions!
Rang the dealer but they all went home at 5:30.
I am at work now and need to drive home about 40 miles. What should I do???

Looks like another case of ITG + MAF = Dead MAF...
With the engine idling, pop the bonnet and disconnect the MAF. If the car stalls, or nearly stalls, it may not be your MAF. However, if there's no change to the revs, the MAF's on it's way.
Replace ITG with STi/K&N/Green (not in any particular order!), and if the above test points to the MAF being knackered, get a new one ASAP and avoid hard driving until then.

Now there's a name from the past

If MAF's fail with OE filters, it's hardly fair to blame the ITG! It's a weak MAF. I agree this sounds like the likely culprit so don't drive your car hard until it's been checked/replaced. The Select Monitor/DeltaDash should be able to show you the MAF isn't working properly.

It depends on the reason for failing though, doesn't it? Yes they fail for other reasons, but if they fail due to oil contamination, and there's an ITG filter present, what are the chances it's due to the ITG filter...?

Well... well...
Dealer has just confirmed the MAF sensor failure. So it needs to be replaced -- cost about 70 quid
Not sure if I should go back to the standard filter or try Green from TSL. From this experience I suspect that they are all quite dodgy...

Cheer-up! At least the engine is in one piece, and to change the maf is easy. For 2 years I have run my Stiv3 on a Halfords panel filter....It is now on a Green cotton from Demon Tweeks. No noticeable difference except the cost.
I think a good spray with Brake cleaner om the maf and wait for it to exaporate will do no harm, but sounds like £70 cheque needs writing, better than £4070 for a new motor!

I'd have said every 6mths
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd guess there is absolutely no proof that the ITG has caused your MAF failure. Just as much as there's no proof that it didn't.
There's a lot of paranoia surrounding the ITG filter and failed MAF's. It's extremely serious if your MAF does fail (or is failing), but it's very unfair to blame the ITG when no-one has yet supplied any evidence to support this.
If your worried, run with the std paper filter or try the STI one for slightly better performance.

I suppose you are right.
The only difference with the standard filter would have been that the cost would've been covered by the warranty (I've got the extended policy) but with the ITG filter it gave the warranty company a perfect excuse not to pay...
