Yes, I think some people have done this. It's not recommended AT ALL if one of those cats is in the up-pipe. You really wouldn't want fragments of cat flying into your turbo!

Why not just buy a full de-cat second hand. You will be able to sell it on for almost what you bought it for when you sell the car. would be a better option surely... also you are more likely to get a better gas flow and therefore the full benefit of a de-cat.

Someone is charging you fifty quid to saw your cats in half and weld them back together? You've been had!

As Fatman suggests, you might be better off saving your money and putting it towards a proper decat downpipe. If you do go the route you're suggesting, you're likely to be in sh*t street come MOT time when your car fails the emissions test.

If you keep the standard bits, you can chuck the standard DP back on before it goes through. If you're had the catalyst ripped out, you might have to buy one, with the end result costing you a lot more than a decent DP would have done originally.

Sounds like this could come back to haunt you if youre not careful, what about when you come to sell the car ?

while we're on the cheap knackers alternative, why not just weld on a 40mm scaffolding pole from the downpipe... !!!

Would that be a proper open neck stainless downpipe or just a normal one with the catalyst beaten out?

Yeah I did this on my XR3i when the cat shattered and bocked up the exhaust

First I just cut the box open took out what was left and welded it back up as a quick fix, but it sounded really tinny afterwards, so I ending up cutting out the whole box and welding a section of tubing in place of it

waited 'till the MOT was due to see what would happen...and it passed (only just mind) !! So I left it like that
