Hi all,

Am considering a career change, my contract (IT based) runs out in a few months and I really fancy doing something else.

I've got a possibility of some work at a main dealer car showroom, and am thinking of taking this as a foot in the door to the motor industry.

Is anyone else in car sales?

If so, what could I realistly look to earn? Would you recomend it as a career etc etc

My brother used to be one (now into managerial side more).

I think the basic is usually pretty dire, but commission and bonuses (like vouchers etc.) from finance deals can make you a decent wedge. Plus you have a company car...

 

if you know anything about cars, i suggest that your skills would not be suited to this occupation.

 

I second what proper charlie says. I'm a car nut who sold cars for a while, soul destroying is all I will say.

i sold cars for a main dealer for 6 months in 1996.....shocking job, 5k basic- idiot custumers.......even the good guys werent making lots and they lived up to EVERY stereotype

I agree with above - (did it also for six months)

do as a shorth term job - but not a career - good money to be made if your don't care about customers - I found other salesmen dislike each other as competing with each other to win a crust.

lots of salemen arguments with each other and other depts.

 

Been sellin cars for 4 years, if youre good you can earn decent money. As said basic salary is usually rubbish but if you can sell you can make $$. Finance commission, extended warranties, car care kits, etc...

You wont know until you try it but its not suited to every1. The slightest bad day can destroy you. I once had 7 of my 11 deals cancel in one month, i couldnt believe it.

Unless you've been doing it for 12 months or more u wont really appreciate how good it can be. Loyal customers DO and WILL come back to buy from you again and if you've treated them well, they will ask for you by name. Try and ask what the dealer is like to work for, some places i wouldnt touch with a barge pole.

Agree with everyting boro says. We get payed in 3 bands A being the lowest which for us is 10 thousand plus 5 percent comission on your profit. Then band B which is a higher basic plus 8 percent of your total profit for the month. Then band C next one up plus 12 percent.

There really is good money to be made if you can sell. I sold timesahre before in spain so i can sell anything if you can sell that
