I know there is no definate answer to this as it depends on its age, condition etc but is anyone doing this on a standard Type R box?

sg72 is and does quite a high mileage IIRC.

Bob and Harvey are running the 4 door STi gearboxes with success.

They apparently changed the mounting in 98 I think, which leads to less casing flex. Question is... can a newer box be fitted to an older car reaping the benefits if there are fewer bolt holes?

But can you mount it up to a pre-99 effectively?

Casing is different between phase 1 & 2, and you can fit either to anything. Only issue is that pahse one use 4 bolts, and phase 2 7 or 8...can't remember

I've now run a Legacy turbo (circa '97) box for upwards of 20k kms without issue at around 310-320 ps. But I've taken it easy

So it follows that if you can only use 4 bolts, even if you have a MY99+ gearbox, you won't get any of the benefits.

no, I dont think the bolts provide the extra strength, but they may help.. my six speed is held by four..

Phase 1 - 2 / engine /box's are interchangable as richard says
just pay attention to diff ratio's

Hi John.

As it happens. My cars gearbox has just been taken out today.
To fix a syncro problem in 5th.
Think this is more of an age/mileage related thing.
Gears themselves appear to hold up well at this sort of power.
And hopefully slightly beyond.(Fingers crossed).

What box does Andy F have... is it the standard short ratio RA?

Seems i have the shorter ratio box in my WRX too.... do these have the same sort of problems with 3rd/4th as the UK boxes?

I think it's all down to luck.

Andy is lucky with turbo's, unlucky with gearboxes

They are proven. Good.

Cheers for the input fella's.
sg72, i too have a sycrho prob with fifth, it would seem this is something common to a lot of impreza gear boxes independant of power, so all in all i think im going to try my luck.

Cheers, John

Think I read somewhere about 5th on Type Rs only having one syncro ring.
Whereas others have Two?

Anyone confirm ?

I should have kept quiet...just lunched 2nd in my poor Legacy box after upping the power a bit.... (finally fixed my det issue - operator error )

Bugger, but could have been worse - 6MT linkage en-route and prop being dropped off for shortening tonight.

Cool

From what I can gather in recent threads, just get a 6 speed with all the trans bits and the job is done to 350/400 bhp? Need to carry a bit more weight (25Kg) but a cheap alternative to Lateral kit/Quaife etc? You get to fit a bigger clutch if you want too!
Sounds just the ticket to me.

Oh, and buy a trans jack too, mines a Draper floor jack, realy good and just £80.....

Does anyone yet have a handle on which Impreza has what diff ratio/gear ratios so to compare, say, an early RA/4,11 trans and a v7 scooby trans???

Graham.
