Just a quick and maybe stupid question.

I have just changed my turbo on a 99 GT from a TD04 to a TD05 and before I go and get it EcuTek'ed I just took a short ride to see if the turbo is boosting at all. It is, but only 8 psi where the old showed around 15 psi. Is this a failure or shoud the remap raise the boost pressure?

and this may be a quick and maybe stupid answer but a couple of points:

are all the connections tight so there isn't a boost leak?

there was a thread recently about somebody having the boost drop off and people said the car had gone into "limp home" safe mode via the ecu - it might have been due to other types of tinkering but have a search back over the last week or two

 

Have you still got the restrictor in the pipe off the compressor outlet and have connected the T-piece and solenoid?

 

There should'nt be any restrictor in the compressor outlet and I have connected the T-connector.

I have tried to find leaks, but can't see anything leaking.

At first I had the Dawes fitted and with the current setting it gave 14 psi on the TD04, on the TD05 it gives 10 psi.

When connecting to the T-connector and the solenoid, should it the give the normal 14 psi on the TD05 as well or what would be the normal behavior?

Maybe i'm wrong about the restrictor in the compressor, how do I check that, I mean what does it look like if it's still there?

There should be a restrictor in the line off the compressor outlet, but you may get overboost in funny places.

Safest option is to run 8 PSI until your remap anyway.

 

Thanks John, I know. But the problem is that I need to drive to Holland to get the map and don't want to go the 2000 km just to find out I have a problem with my turbo. That would be a total waist of time, if you know what I mean :-)

If there is no restrictor in the compressor outlet then yes totally expected.

IF you have a knocklink and AFR meter you could refit the Dawes and turn it up to run 1 bar as long as it isn't knocking or running lean.

Otherwise you are likely to do more damage proving it will run the boost, although I appreciate your predicament.

 

Thanks John. I have the KnockLink fittet, but if this is not totally out in the blue I think I'll keep the boost at the 8 psi and hope that Mark at EMS can raise it to a normal level when he map it. I'm not taking any chances :-)
