Fully synthetic 15W/50 Motul seems to be a good one... i was using 5w/40 fully synthetic changed to 10w/40 today (couldn't get hold of 15w/50) seems smoother but that could be my imagination

"Mobile 1"?
Which version of the oil was your dealer talking about? There are two different types of Mobil 1. The 15w/50 "Motorsport" version is fine during the summer. The 0w/40 normal version is a bit thinner than ideal for summer use, although it's not a bad choice in winter, especially if you do a lot of short-trip commuting that wouldn't otherwise allow the oil to attain optimal temperature.
At this time of year, a mixture of the two is probably optimal. As has been stated above, the important thing is changing it every 3-4000 miles. The 10K service intervals on the MY01< cars is far too long for the oil.

I'm usingh the Mobil 1 which the dealer recommends and put in after the run in period which is 5w/40 I think.
Bearing in mind greasemonkeys comments should this be OK until the weather warms up a bit?
Also I have an Audi A6 2.8 Quattro with 160k miles - I noticed recently the dealer (Audi specialist) is putting 5w/40 oil in it. This will be too thin for an engine with this many miles on won't it?
What would anyone recommend? - the car only uses a bit of oil and is split mint - no knocks or rattles from the engine. Wonderred if the Magnatec 15w/40 would be OK??
