You can try the following to see if they help.

Wynnes hydraulic lifter treatment (didnt help myne)
Different oil grade and type, depending on budget... Castrol RS 10/60 is the oil that I will be using next change. I have just changed to Motul 15/50 and the tappets are noisy again
Mobil M/Sport 15/50 is also an option that I've tried.

Frequent oil changes approx 3000 miles will also help you in the long term.

API engines recommended something to me in the way of Dextron in the oil and run for a while. They swear by it. I would rather they advised on that one though.

Failing the above cheaper options you can change the heads for Impreza ones as they use a different design lifter that donot sound like TDI's

Good Luck and welcome to world of Legacy Stealth

Do a quick search on hear the tappets are well listed.

buy a big stereo and get TD badge for the back and no one will know.

try 10/40 check your manual. p1s are using 10/30 at dealerships.ive been using vauxalls 10/40 for a year on my car is a lot smoother and not as noisy.ive used all the expensive above tap tap tap ,thats my opinion .ive even rang subaru technical they insist on mineral oil and semi at a push .they have advised dealerships for years !me and my mates have not had a bang or piston slap using this oil.158 mph no probs

Hi
Speak to Graham at Midland Impreza, the only fix is to have different heads fitted, the noise will never disappear unless you have the lifters replaced, the cost of that would be very near having complete head replacement.

I have had some good service from those guy's.

Thomo, hi.

I have used 10/40s and have even used the Vauxhall stuff. It didnt make any difference to the tappets on my Leg T. Estate.

I have tried all the top brand oils that have been reccommended on hear and by reputable engine builders.

i dont want get into a Gulf War regarding oil but if the big names on here say 10/60 and 15/50 is better for our engines then thats fine by me. I cant afford an engine rebuild and have taken the engine as far as I would like to go safely. A bit more on the oil is preventitive maintenance.

I can get hold of Mobil M/Sport 15/50 for not that much more than the Vaulxhall stuff and the same price as summat like Magnatec anyway so I'm happy if nothing else.

The Legacy engines are prone to tappets with age compared to the Imprezas. I ts just something us leg T owners have to deal with and get used to when we 1st buy em.

Ste.
