You have just said that the engines normally produce over 208bhp as standard.
How did you come to this conclusion?
If so, why do Subaru quote 208bhp?
I ask because as you probably know, the rolling-road figures at PE are thought to be fairly generous on Scoobs, starting the theory that standard MY98 cars were closer to 230bhp.

It's not possible to quantify the differences between fuel as we have never dyno tested the engine on both fuels.

The work was done on 97RON for the 99/00MY ECU as that is what is commercially available here. You are probably correct in stating that higher octane fuel will give a further improvement, but again we have not tested it.

The ECU will always try to run at it's optimised settings and does not need resetting to make the most of the fuel that was used when it was originally installed.

Is just the ECU still available for the MY96 cars? I will be getting a full SS exhaust system so dont require the Pro Drive back B or the filter as mine is already Ram Aired.

What would be the cost and the likely gains? as I don't want to go the way of the Link. This is mainly a cost and warranty decision.

The ECU is still available, but we can only supply it as part of the complete package.

Power is increased officially by 15% to 240bhp but as the engines normally produce over 208bhp as std this may be more.

Warranty will not be too much of an issue as your car will now be over 3 years old.

Mike 'Prodrive' Wood - clarification please!

In an earlier thread (PPP - Hard Facts) you said: "The PPP was mapped for 97 RON, and is safe on 95, but as with all performance engines should be run on the best fuel available."

I had the PPP fitted to my MY00 car in April this year (and excellent it is, too). But on the certificate that came with it, it says "We recommend you continue to use 98 RON Super Unleaded."

So I have always believed that on my PPP the ECU is mapped for 98 RON. What is the true situation?

But you also say that "performance engines should be run on the best fuel available" which implies that there are further gains to be had by running even higher RON.

I have done some back to back tests with a stop-watch and the results consistently show that my PPP-equiped car goes faster on 97 RON than it does on 95 RON, and faster still on 97 RON with Millers Octane Plus (99 RON?). When I can get it on a dyno, I'm sure my crude findings will be verified.

So, in your view which fuel gives the best performance with a PPP? Can you put a figure on the differences?

Second question. In another thread, you said that "it (the ECU) instantly reacts to a change in fuel." The implication here is that resetting the ECU when changing fuels is unnecessary as the ECU will automatically choose the optimum settings for itself within a few miles. Is that right?

I thought the MY99 ECU was developed on 98 Ron, not 97. In fact i was told by Prodrive that it was and that it would just retard back on 97 Ron and i did notice a performance decrease.

The ECU is sold as part of a package is why i presume it isnt sold seperately (clever eh). A bit like buying hifi with no speakers?, or a PC wihout a screen. Although the speakers and screen are more essential for the above than an exhaust system is for a remapped ECU, better breathing than standard helps make a superior rounded product.

As Sunil correctly states, the ECU has been designed to suit the rest of the package and only that package. It will not be optimised for a different specification of components.

what happens if I have the rest of the kit, i.e. centre pipe, BB, filter, but not the ECU - will you provide just the ECU in this case?

When I had my PPP done (September 99) SUL was 98 RON, and my car was mapped to that. When SUL went down to 97, I rang Prodrive and was told the ECU would adjust itself. I didn't notice any real difference nor noticable drop in performance on the switch to 97, although do use octane booster for track days and do notice very marginal benefits, and smoother running.

Come on, Mike. Thanks for your answers so far but Sunil is asking a valid question about what seems to be a contradiction on the 97 or 98 RON bit. I only want to know out of curiosity as it's not going to change anything, but it looks like you're dodging the issue.

I'm not dodging the issue, I'm just not in front of my computer all day, every day.

As I've already stated, the ECU has the ability to learn to an extent and is able to run on various fuel grades. The original mapping was done with 97RON but you will still find the car goes better on 98 and worse on 95. As I've also stated you should run on the best fuel available if you want the best performance.

Dave, when im not on top of your missus, i am not necessarily in front of my PC, i dont have net access at work and i dont work in the IT industry, so i do all my **** stirring in the evenings, weekends and early hours, are you impressed???

When my PPP was purchased, there was NO 97 Ron "commercially available" in the UK, only 98 Ron. So (without prejudice)I personally dont fully believe that it was mapped for 97 originally , although it runs fine on it. It will run on 95..............

I know where you're coming from with the 97/98 RON stuff and it does seem strange. However...

Just spose Prodrive knew that 97 unleaded was around the corner (I don't think it was a secret). Mapping for 97 would then make sense, but also knowing that the car will respond better to higher octane (in the same way as it goes slower on lower RON) the recommendation was still to use the highest RON available, ie 98.
