Went out for a run last night in my sti v7 and could not believe the difference to before it went in for a service.

Before the car felt fast, but now OMG.

Car is 16 months old and has done just under 10,000 miles now when i get to about 5000-5500 ish is seems to go bonkers as if the variable valve timing it kicking in AGAIN??

Before car pulled from about 3500 ish right thru to red line now, pulls from 3500 then at 5000 ish goes again and pings to the redline very very quickly.

I dont know whats happend but im ecstatic

Hawk (yes the fuel economy is crap but my grins are worth it)

What about the old conspiracy theory that on new cars, the ECU is altered and pre-set at a "safe", restricted level for the run in period and they have now unleashed the full fury of all those horses!

Okay, so its not exactly a conspiracy theory, but we could start it as one!

Seriously though, perhaps the mechanical mided amongst us can tell us whether a simple oil and filter service can have such a pronounced effect on performance?

Surely not.... or is it psychological on the part of the driver??

there is a definate 2nd kick at 5000 rpm has anyone else with an sti v7 or 8 experienced this????

My Sti8 standard, pulls average till 4500 then all hell breaks loose till the red line. However in 3rd(ish) and definitely 4th and 5th it takes a hell of a lot longer to redline. Anyone else with an STi8?

Mine has 5500 on clock and not had the 10grand service.

Cheers

Dan

What courtesy car did you have whilst yours was being serviced

That might explain alot. Used to get a Justy at my local dealer and after every car service the Scoob felt like a rocket.

Cheers

My STi7 has been quicker recently, and it's just had it's 10,000 mile service! Didn't tie in the 2, more likely to be the cold weather. My car has PPP already, so it's unlikely to be anything the dealer has done.

Feels good though!

Is there really that much lag on an STi8 ? my RA goes at 2,500 and at 5,000rpm your hand better be moving towards the gearstick otherwise it will be over the 7,500 redline before you have chance to move . The cool air probably has had the most effect recently its surprising how much an effect it has especially if you are not use to turbocharged cars.

ECU reset must be favorite, did you use some 95 ron at some point ?

My STi8 does seem a bit late getting on boost (which is NOT turbo lag, though this term is often wrongly used), compared to the EVO though it sounds as if the PPP sorts that out, maybe the cat is a bit too restrictive (or cheap, to put it another way)

Did they fit PPP to the wrong car? LOL!

No seriously as chrisp says the cold weather can make it faster. Like the waterspray on the intercooler.

Simple answer to this one: it's getting colder and damper.

Cold damp air is denser, and carries more oxygen...

Nah Chiark, thats not the reason.

The instances of this happening are too widespread to blame humidity and atmospheric temperatures.

People have seen an immediate difference after a service that they haven't experienced on say, cold mornings perhaps.

There is more to it than that.....

My vote goes to ECU fettling!

Same with my STi7/PPP - massive improvement in performance around 15K miles, coupled with improvement in fuel economy (has any of you had that as well??) Mike Wood put it down to the general loosening of the car as it ages...... and there have been plenty of threads which said that 'normal' Classics and Bugeyes also show marked improvement around 5k - 8k miles.
