Does anyone know if that tappet cleaner from DX PRODUCTS is any good...Or crap,I have tried to find their telephone number or a site on the com to no avail......?.

My MY99 UK Turbo seems to be a bit chappy at the top end. Because I am new to the Impreza I dont know if this is a normal noise or a potentially expensive one.

Any ideas?

 

"Could be" if left. have you tried an oil change, maybe with using a "flush oil" addative prior to draining. Other than that, try an oil "fortifier" once the oil is changed, can help to maintain a coating on the tappets whilst running.
easier to try these first before having the engine pulled apart to change the tappet followers.

 

Its going in for a major scooby service and timing belt on Wed at a Scooby garage. It only has 24000 miles and has been serviced up to its 60000 service so (all by Subaru).

I will mention to them about it. Just wanted some forewarning. I am guessing becuase I am considering spending some dough on a Scooby warranty on it that they will give it a good going over first anyway.

 

Cheers for that anyway. Is there a recommended oil fortifier like you mentioned?

 

I always use "Forte" products, but if unable to get [most scooby dealers stock the stuff] then try a halfords centre and get a can of "wynns" oil fortifier, should do same trick

Forte also list a "top end treatment" which helps to clean the oxidised carbons out of the tappets.

if its only done 24K miles, rattle from tappets is a little surprising. Has the car been left of road for a while ? may be the oil has emulsified ?
Be careful be oil additives, they may introduce the carbon deposits back into the oil system and cause more blockages. Personally I would try doing extra oil changes with good quality oil.

 

Are you sure its the tappets and not the injectors? Most MY99s I have seen have tappy injectors.

 

Have you seen my post today engine knocking,perhaps you have a similar problem ?

 

A lot of these additives claim to reduce valve noise due to cleaning out the hydraulic lifters, don't forget the 99my has solid lifters!
My 99 Scoob was always tappety right from new, it sounded like one of those old sewing machines at idle! he combination of valve clearance and injector tick can be a little disconcerting. The earlier engines with hydraulic lifters were noticably quieter. You could ask the garage to check the valve clearances and re-shim if needed but it'll cost ya! (checking valve clearance is on the service schedule at 60k)

Bit confused about what you said about considering a scooby warranty, do you mean a proper subaru warranty? coz if your cars an my99 the warranty will be up, and if you extended it by one extra year only i understand that you can`t extend it futher to another year. you have to buy the 2 year extension before the original 3 year warranty runs out.

Well the car went for its 60k service (plus timing belt) yesterday. 650 sheets lighter, the garage said the car was fine and that the noise was normal and from the injectors.

I could get a Subaru warranty through them if I wanted to. Dont know whether or not to do it as the car is still low mileage (24k) and I am not going to really abuse\mod it.....

Do they go wrong that often?!! Is it worth 350 bucks?

 

panic stations here - 60K service coming up and didnt realise it was gonna be 650 notes - I was told that it was gonna be around 490 - and it was clarified that this does include cam belt change.

also - what oil additive is recommended to give the engine a flush prior to change during the service?

 

My service was 350 smackers thanks to SIDC discount.

Then 100 spondooliks for front brake pads (I nearly fell over when I heard this as I told them to change them as they were low and the brakes were stripped for cleaning anyway). Fortunately they never charged me for fitting them !

Then the cost of the timing belt and fitting, plus a couple of bulbs brought the total to 647 sheets. The car should have had a timing belt at the 45 k service but to be sure it did, i got it done anyway. It cost almost 200 zamolias but thats better than 2000 zamolias.

They thoroughly tested the car to make sure it would be covereable by a Subaru backed warranty and that the tapping was down to injectors.

Car goes a bit quicker now too for some strange reason. Maybe a brake was binding before or summit....

 

Are you sure its not because your wallet is so much lighter!!
