just wondering if anyone has tried one of these? they sound a bit too good to be true...

i think they may also be referred to as a swirl-pot...

 

A mixed collection of 'snake oil' and 'works well' are the general answers.
Personally, I'd not touch one on a modern engine, although could work well on an older one. Screwing with the airflow isn't a good idea

 

I've installed one on my JDM Forester s/tb a couple of months ago. Initial signs are that is a slight improvement in low speed pick up/driveability, and a definite improvement in fuel consumption. The latter depends on how I'm driving - on (relatively) steady runs it seems to have improved by at least 10% - in spirited sprint mode there is very little difference. The latter is not really that surprising given that the unit is, as I understand it, inactive when the turbo is really earning its keep.

But as the majority of my daily commute involves 80 miles or so on very busy dual carriageways where the chances of spirited driving are almost non-existent I'm more than happy with the results so far.

If you get one, make sure you get the little 'sock' that goes over it - makes the 'noise' a lot less noticable
I had one on my 16v Clio, it did make quite a differnce on fuel consumption, but I couldn't live with the noise it made

 

The noise disappears once it beds in. It does help motorway mpg. I recently got 32mpg on a long motorway run (Classic MY00). Although as previous post says, as soon as turbo kicks in the unit closes, as it works on vacuum pressure to create the "swirl effect" in the inlet manifold.

 

I have one for sale, less than a year old, done about 3k miles. £30.

Arn't they the little gadget that basically plumbs in so you have in effect a leaking manifold. Thus leaning out your cars mixture hence the improved fuel economy.

if it the thing i'm thinking of then i wouldnt touch one, have you checked your afr since fitting it?

In cases like this i always wonder if they are that good, given the huge amount of money manufacturers spend trying to improve fuel economy wouldn't they fit them or a similar device as standard. There is a reason that your car doesnt have one.

 

whare are selling it then merv?

thought i'd ask about them on here before splashing the cash - assumed there must be some reason why they're not fitted as standard.

 

I believe I am right in saying that the new shape scoobs already include Subaru's own built in version of an Ecotek valve... so if its good enough for them...
