What's in it? I guess the best cleaner would be cleaning alcohol and a good clean cloth. Something that won't leave a residue on the disc surface.

No ...it may leave a residue that could contaminate your brake pads.Buy a can of proper brake cleaner in an aerosol can..(try the 'pound shop' or 'Zodiac' type of shops),down this way they are for sale at £1 a tin.

Just make sure whatever your using evaporates completely without leaving any residue.

Personally, I would'nt risk it, use the propper stuff. The last thing you want to do is f*ck up your brakes!

A kettle of boiling water has always worked for me with no problems.

Gremlin, petrol would do if push came to shove.

You should be able to buy brake cleaner by the gallon from your local autoparts wholesaler, while you can get a remote spray gun for a few quid (Waxoyl guns work fine, but many household window cleaner type spray guns don't because the solvent melts the washers) to spray it on.

This works out far cheaper than buying aerosol brake cleaner - a gallon costs me £6 locally. A pint will get you royally p*ss*d, as long as you can drink it before it evaporates!
