The S202 is a limited edition version of the STi8 Spec C, whereas the MY03 (i.e. current) Spec C is obviously based on the STi9.

Given the benefits of the twin-scroll turbo setup and more aerodynamically efficient front end treatment, one would expect the newer car to outperform the older one, although given that their quoted power, torque and kerb weight figures are very similar, there wouldn't be much in it.

Thought the Spec C had DCCD-A also wich wouldnt make it faster on straights but may help it in lap times around a track.

Definitely. The MY03 cars are better in a whole stack of ways. If the choice was a S202 or an MY03 Sti RA Spec C, it's a no-brainer. Unless, of course, you are the person who likes the bugeyes...

Why does everyone rave on about the Spec C?, surely a JDM STi9 GL model is the one that people should be buying as it has far more luxuries than the stripped out Spec C.
AFAIK the only mechanical difference is something to with the bearing in the turbo
My money would be on a GL model, something like this http://www.findit.co.uk/cars/subaru/impreza/732166.htm not a bad spec for £23k.

On the DH cars website it says the following:-

Japanese WRX STI GL Saloon
Max Power 322bhp & 394nm max torque (Autocar Figures)

What Does The Japanese STI have the the UK models don't?
New Twin Scroll Turbo Big Bearing, Equal Length Manifolds, Nitrided Crankshaft, Alloy Conrods & Pistons, D.C.C.D (Drivers Centre Differential System), HID (High Intensity Discharge), STI Quick Steering Rack, STI Front Strut Bar, Bridgestone bespoke RE070-Cup Tyres, 8000rpm Red Line, Rear wash wipe & Smoked Rear Door Glass.

Japanese STI Also Has The Following Specification The Same As UK Models
High Rear Wing, ABS, Brembo Brakes, Auto Air Con, Suretrack LSD, Twin Air Bags, 6 Speed Gearbox, 17" Gold Alloys, Cat 1 Alarm, Trackstar & Metallic Paint

Japanese WRX STI Spec C
Lightweight model weighing 1625kg compared to the standard vehicles 1715kg.
Spec C Special Equipment: Drivers Control Differential, Spec C Suspension, Spec C Chassis, BBS Alloys, 13.1 Steering Rack & Rally Style Roof Vent.
The Spec C is not fitted with Air Con, High Spoiler or Power Windows but all can be added if required. The vehicle is also fitted with a 50L-fuel tank compared to 60L on the standard vehicle

There are those that like the bug - not find it with me

The Spec C is a lot more sorted with the suspension and power delivery (less lag than the 202)! There's only one choice to go for there....

...and I have (so must be good)

Edited to say - what weight Danny: "At 1310kg, it is 120kg lighter than a regular Sti" - specification on Iain Litchfield's website.

Surely you're missing the point for a large number of Impreza owners Danny?

Many of us are after good handling and performance, not luxuries, and the increasingly heavy "standard" cars aren't what we're looking for from Subaru. If I wanted luxuries in preference to performance I'd drive a BMW 5 series...

Well you can hardly call air con and electric windows a luxury these days can you? this is what you are giving up when you buy a Spec C over a GL model, not to mention the thinner door panels, no boot lining, etc etc.
Each to their own I guess...

Y'know, I reckon I could make money by creating a set of Impreza "top trumps" cards.

"22b track width beats s202"...
..."titanium turbo beats..."

etc

The Spec c has an oil cooler, and longer wheel base than the normal JDM MY03 STI. Many customers do go for the normal JDM STI over the Spec C if they want more refinement (& its cheaper). It all depends what you are looking for.

The difference there is that someone doesn't know what Subaru's acronyms stand for. Both these people are actually referring to the same thing.

The correct acronym is actually DCCD, and it stands for Driver Controlled Centre Differential. On the MY03 cars, it is also often referred to as DCCD-A, because it has a fully automatic mode unlike earlier cars which were manually controlled only.

This diff is standard on the Spec C, and an option on the "vanilla" JDM STi.
