Codolences indeed- I must admit I read these stories and it always seems to be the Subaru drivers that are killed. Very worrying. I'm thinking of getting something a bit safer.
Sad news but it is apparent that he was driving like a prat travelling too fast.
Let this be a lesson to all that post threads like "Done 130 in my scoob last night" and the like.
If you live by the sword then you die by the sword.
It's just a shame that the w@nker had to extingush a young 16 year old girls life in the process.
Flame me if you want but this sort of thing will continue to happen and innocent people will be killed until people grow up a bit and drive within the speed limits.

Badger: I don't think driving within the speed limits in any way guarantees safety. As far as I can see speed limits are part of the problem, people assume they can stick to a limit and be safe. That just isn't true. They give a false sense of confidence IMHO. Better to rely on your own judgement of what is a safe speed to do and back that judgment up with some driver training.
Sounds like this driver was going to fast for his abilities. Shame he and his passenger had to find out the hard way that EXCESS speed kills.

There is a section of any performance car fraternity that will be devoted to bragging and driving like retards. We had one in here last week bragging about racing on A roads.
I personaly dont give two ***** if they want to go out and kill themselves driving at lunatic speeds on a track, if that's there mentality they deserve all they get. It's when they kill and injure innocent people on public roads not only in their own cars but other road user's it makes me totally and utterly furious. I own a car that will do exceesive speed and I drivie sensibly, I speed don't get me wrong, but 85 or 90 on a motorway is one thing. I catagorically do not speed on any other roads - full stop !!.
This ****** got what he deserved, it's just a devastating pity he took others with.

I stand corrected. How stupid have I been? I mean, there was me thinking that the speed limits are assesed and set by proffesionals and all the time you had the answer to road safety.
Thanks for that.

18yr old escort turbo baseball capped driver: "In my judgement its safe to do 135mph on a dual carriageway. I have mechanical ABS and 195/60 tyres, which means i can get out of any situation likely to occur!!"
yeah right!!
what other deterants could be used???
hanging??

I see....it's all so clear now. So YOU can judge the speed that you feel you are safe to drive at regardless of the speed limit set for the road. This will make both you and all around you safer than if you leave enough time for your journey and stick to the speed limit.

NACRO didn't say he'd go faster than the speed limit - just that he'd use his judgement as to what a safe speed was - a point of view to which I agree. It's just a shame that some people's judgement of a safe speed is very wrong. (Mine has been wrong too, so don't bother to flame me for preaching - I never said I was perfect.)
Oh Oh Oh....or rain, snow and high winds. I didn't say stick to the speed limit regardless of the conditions did I?
If you break the speed limit and crash and die......you deserve it. Plain and simple.
My thought only go to the innocent people that you kill in the process.

Speed limits, right or wrong are deemed to be there for safety, and are the law if we like it or not.
To leave it to the individual to judge if his or her speed is appropriate for the road, weather conditions and the abilities of their car and more importantly of them as a driver is a dull idea, sorry but it is.
Go to any town or city and you will see the Max Power brigade doing stupid speeds in mechanically deficeint cars. Very often extremely young drivers with little or no real experience and skills to speak of.

My appologies for misinterpreting "regardless of the speed limit set" (I have done 25 mph on a motorway in rather severe weather before now - a boat would have been better than a car that day!)
IMHO the answer to this is that there needs to be more compulsory driver training. After all, look at 17 and 18 yr olds insurance policies with and without "pass plus" - I'm led to believe it's considerable these days.

It seems that some who have posted have no sympathy whatsoever... this thread has already turned into the usual debate about the "rights and wrongs" (term used loosly) regarding speeding.
Some have jump to the conclusion that we have a right nutter behind the wheel who deserved everything he got. All I have read is that a Subaru driver has been killed...there is no mention in the report that he was driving dangerously - overtaking a people carrier IMHO does not constitute stupidity unless is done in a dangerous location and in a dangerous manner- the report only mentioned that the Police are trying to find the PC passengers, it does not say that the accident occurred as result of the overtaking.
Hands up all the Impreza drivers who have NEVER overtaken on a single carriageway. This guy could easily have been one of us who had bad luck and lost it, and that can happen below the speed limit as well
I don't condone reckless driving, and if it turns out that if in this case he WAS driving recklessly and dangerously then so be it, he was stupid and irresponsible. The car may even have been stolen, in which case he deserved it. YES I do feel extremely sorry for the passenger, again unless they knew it was stolen.
However I think its a sad reflection that some have jumped to the conclusion that MOST seem to have reached. Lets just hope it doesn't turn out to be someone know to some of us who we respect.
My sympathy goes out to all involved, and I wish those injured unnecessarily a quick recovery.
Edited as my original post was a bit harsh regarding some of the previous posts, sorry guys

quote "So YOU can judge the speed that you feel you are safe to drive at regardless of the speed limit set for the road."
Er yes otherwise I wouldn't entertain driving. As was pointed out I didn't say that would be in excess of the limit, in fact often it's below the limit. Unlike the other idiots I see doing 30 past a school at kicking out time for example. Personally I slow down so I can stop in case a kid ran in front of me.
I was just pointing out some people view speed limits as targets to be reached and don't give a fig about the raod conditions.
A bit weird how you jump to the conclusion I'm advocating speeding, as I'm not.

erm, if it all was safe and above board then maybe he would be here to tell the tale himself??
A certain amount of logic was used to reach the conclusions that were reached, not blindly following an article and deciding that the reported article must be true, oh unless of course some bloke down down the pub said it was so..
Nacro, read the NCap tests before you start walking around with *end is nigh* sandwich boards on

For the record, I'm not saying "remove the speed limits"!!
As has been said it's a daft idea, but sense and reason, somewhere along the line must prevail!.
Just attempt to teach people that they aren't target speeds/minimum speeds etc...
A tall order I know, given some people's attitudes to driving...

NACRO....Just the way I read it mate. Sorry if this was not the case.
Jason.
gareth....I do offer my sympathy....but only to the family of the young girl and the innocent people in the mercedes.
It is harsh of me...I know. I stand by it though.

NCAP results were 2 stars for my "classic" Impreza- the end really is nigh for me I think as far as my old car goes.
Badger no offence taken, I agree that too many people view the roads as a private racetrack. Personal responsibility is the key here- the problem is a lot of people are not personally responsible!
I feel sorry for the guy who died as it is a very harsh way to learn a lesson.

tragic but thats life but why do people pass judgement im pretty convinced weve all overtaken down single lanes before maybe 1 or 2 cars in one go he may of been unlucky to clip the curb and im sure most of us have overtaken and thought christ that was a little close but if he was trying to be flash or it was nicked then im not so concerned
hmmm can of worms here
but, everybody dies in the end dont they?
it doesnt matter if u drive like a complete saint and live till 90 years old, sooner or later your life is taken away, sounds like he was racing a "sports car" probably being egged on by the young passenger, theres a time and a place for everything

The driver was in fact 30, so until we have more fact and less assumption the content would be better related to this incident
"Five young people have died after the car they were travelling in plunged 40ft off a bridge and landed on its roof.
Witnesses spotted the Vauxhall Cavalier driving at speed before it clipped a kerb, smashed through bollards and appears to have cleared a set of railings as it flipped upside down and crashed on to the carriageway below.
Police say those who died in the crash in Leeds city centre were all between 18 years old and their mid-20s."
i love the fact that everyone on here thinks that people in their early twenties are complete idiots with no idea about the performance of these types of cars.
Being one of the 'guilty' I am still in my early twenties. I've worked hard to get an Impreza (and had nothing but trouble I haste to add!) and I for one appreciate that they are fast and dangerous cars.
Give some of us some credit.
(P.S. I also skateboard meaning I often wear a cap to stop the sun getting in my eyes on ramps etc. This might also mean I wear said cap when driving my impreza. For this I am deeply sorry)

Just a point to consider, it was overtaking another car. Although highly unlikely the car in front could of been driving quite slowly, which is why the other driver decided to get passed. So slow speed can kill to....
This may not be the case in this instance but maybe in other accidents.....
