Noise when turbo spools up - HELP
Not pretty sure what it is. The tone seems to follow the turbo speed, and comes from the right side of the car (exactly the place where you hear the wastegate ticking).
It does it strong after running the car, stopping for half an hour and starting it again. When engine is warm tends to disappear, but remains at full boost. My mechanic said it could be a leaking gasket (I guess a downpipe or uppipe gasket)...
I'm just worried of cooking my turbo, so any explanation is welcome!
Mods are Scoobysport up and downpipe, backbox and Forge VTA dumpvalve on a WRX01 car.
Thanks,
Andrea

I would think it is the exhaust gasket, the car goes as it was always going, no power loss. But, how do I check if the gasket is gone? Do I have to unmount the downpipe/uppipe (looks like a hell of a job)?
Anyway, no worry for the turbo? Just noise but no damage?

Actually the VTA seems ok. It is still dumping air when I lift the throttle, and also I do not think that if it would have a problem, it would reduce when the engine warms up.
Anyway, it's worth to check it in any case. Maybe I could put back the original one and see if I still get the noise before going for some disassembly of the VTA.
Thanks

Just took the car to a Subaru dealer this afternoon. They drove the car and told me it is the turbo that is getting noisier. They said it is normal with open up/downpipes... and they get the same problem if they install the PPP, after a certain mileage.
So I asked, is the turbo breaking or what? ANSWER: just getting noisier, no problem!!!
This does not really convince me, why the h**l should my turbo get noisier, but still be working normally? Noisy turbo bearings???
Really, any help is welcome, before my turbo is gone.

Could just get noisier. As the bearings slowly wear (which they will do, whatever you do), it'll get noisier.
But...
I'm muddled about what noise it's actually making? At spool-up it should/can make a whizzy noise (hold the throttle at the same point & it'll whizz up to a point & hold, or go very high if you keep accelerating). Under boost, a very high pictched, but steady tone, should/can easily be heard (especially with a decat DP).
The actual noise will depend on the turbo - roller bearings (typically IHI/VF series) & sleeve bearings (MHI/TD series) have quite different sounds. The TDs, to me, are easier to hear 'on boost' but very hard to hear at spool-up. The VF series (again, to me
) are loud at spool-up, but very quiet on boost. But they are different sounds, so different ears will hear different things
Erm, does that help? Or should I just stop driveling?

It helps, nom, it helps...
Maybe the title of the thread is not correct, should be NOISE WHEN TURBO GOES ON BOOST. Anyway, I have the standard turbo for a WRX01 (european version). I installed the DP already an year ago, and the noise I was getting was some whistling (louder when spooling up, almost quiet on full boost), and a clear wastegate ticking. Now, on top of this I get a noise that is clearly depending on the rpm of the turbo, so, spool up, it goes up, then stabilizes, and after 5000 rpm of the engine starts to go up again. I agree could be turbo bearings, but why did this happen just from a day to another, and not progressively?
Maybe I did not let the turbo cool down properly and cooked some oil on the bearings, and this is now making the noise?
Edited to say that I'm not English, so describing sounds is not my best cake...:-)
