On top of each of the heads there is a breather.. I can see that the pipe goes under the inlet manufold on both sides.. am I correct in assuming the connect together and come up just to the left of middle of the engine and connect into the air filter pipe?

Want to put them to a catch can.. not sure if I have three to do or just two etc..

you are correct, the two cam breathers are joined together and breath into/out of the intake duct.

 

the idea is that under vacuum the PCV valve opens and sucks fresh air in via rocker cover breathers and out through crank case breathers into the inlet manifold.

however, on boost you tend to get vapour blowing out through the rocker cover breathers and into the inlet prior to the turbo

I believe there is also significant pressure from the crankcase breather whilst on boost (blowby gasses upping the case pressure). IIRC the crankcase breather is vented to the intake duct too when the PCV closes.

So can I pipe off both cam covers to a catch can (read bottle for the minute, as long as the pipe doesn't suck in what it vents) and block off the hole left in the air intake..

I have oil leaks from both cam cover tops and out of where the pipe connects into the air intake, I do a lot of motorway driving so I can only assume the pressure / vapour in the cam covers is greater?? have never cleaned this so the oil is a build up over time but I want to measure how much into a bottle to see if it is worth doing permenatly.

I can't be certain in this case JGM but in my experience, disconnecting pipes which come from the crankcase or in this case the cam covers often cause modern engines to run incorrectly. You can only try it but there is always the fear that it may upset the AFR to a dangerous level. Maybe if you fed the two pipes into a sealed can with a connection to the inlet pipe all may be well, and you can do your oil check.

On tick-over I could blow dry the wifes hair by removing the oil filler cap..

Hope to pressure test the cylinders at the weekend.. or I could just ignore it and save for a new engine and a tow truck..

Right just run pipes from the cam covers and what I hope if the crank case breather... the one with the square angle connector on it below the one disconnected in the picture?

Car seems to be running richer on the AFR now?!
