Just noticed on the small white label stuck to the inside of the fuel filler cap it says min 98 RON unleaded. Presumably that means Optimax only if using "normal" fuel with no octane booster, etc.
I've used Optimax wherever possible but have used 97 RON SUL when no Shell garage has been near. No noticeable difference in performance but strange that Subaru recommend 98 RON in the UK when it isnt freely available...

I noticed the same when I visited the UK last month from Luxembourg where SUL is always 98RON. Fortunately I was still running mine in so after only finding 97RON I only filled up with what I needed, drove carefully and waited until France to refresh the tank with 98RON.
You might find that this is just a standard sticker that Subaru fit to all cars sold all over the world and not just UK cars
I would still always use SUL or Optimax however unless you can't get it.

Why is UK fuel 97 RON these days? It used to be 98 RON as I remember, not only are we taxed to buggery on the stuff we are also getting ripped off for 1 RON. Typical of the UK, I'm getting sick of the place.
When 4 star was stopped they introduce LRP for old cars that couldnt run on NUL. As there wasnt a huge call for 98 SUL as most cars run on 95 RON, SUL and LRP were made from the same base refined fuel which is 97 RON and different additives are introduced to each one. DO NOT USE LRP in your scoob though as the additives will destroy sensors. Why LRP and SUL arent both 98 RON I dont know.
I work in Germany and generally all garages stock three grades 93, 95 and 98RON so SUL is everywhere, Shell have Optimax which is advertised here as 99RON and they are now replacing this with V-Power which 100 RON. But over here there are plenty of big Merc's Audi's, BMW's and Porsches so its always been in very high demand.
Plus SUL is generally cheaper here than NUL in the UK. Although there's probably nothing in it now, with the current exchange rate.

ScoobyDooMe, shame you don't work near Germany's most popular petrol station, Luxembourg
98RON SUL is only 77 eurocents a litre (55 pence you guys in the UK)
I went into a Shell garage the other week and couldn't spot anything above the SUL 98RON, but I'll try one closer to the German border next time and see what they have.
