Cool

I have heard that the automatic number plate recognition systems do not work if the plate is upside down, which sounds logical to me! but what are the legalities of displaying your number plates upside down???? the plate is still clearly readable by a human and a gatso will take a picture which will be looked at by a human so as far as I can see there realy should be no legal issues in dispalying your plates upside down.

Does anybody else agree or know if it is illegal to do so.???

This is not a muppet question so does not need heavy handed moderating I am just curious thats all.

Wurzel,

Not sure why you'd want to show your number plate upside down.

Think you need to get out more.

Cool

I would have thought that it was obvious to even the most interlectually challenged individual why! if it is not illegal and SPECS cameras can't read it then either the government has to pass a new law making it illegal which will take some time or they will need to rewrite the recognition software, which will also take some time. Therefore drivers will have nothing to worry about from these new fangled digital number plate recognition cameras. Thus the government will lose a large sum of money from normal motorists which is what you lot want isn't it ???

What do you hope to gain? An automatic system will simply flag up the plate as one it can't read, and ask a human operator to read it.

Since most people will still have their plates the right way up, you'll still be caught as the human won't be overloaded with work.

However, if we ALL do it, then it's a different story

Far better to fit it the wrong way round then the photo reading person won't be able to read it either.

The law says you must have a number plate. Have you got a number plate fitted to your car sir? Yes officer.

Reminds me of the crash helmet law in Athens. All the cool scooter riders used to ride with no helmets to avoid disturbing their looks. New law passed to say all riders need to wear a helmet. Now all scooter riders wear a helmet, they fasten the strap, put their arm through it and "wear" it on their elbows.

I think you'll find it's illegal. A number plate has to have a set character font as laid down in the law. If it's upside down, they'll no doubt argue that the characters as displayed aren't in that font and therefore illegal.(unless you turn the plate upside down, which don't count)
