First long motorway journey in my new 99 Impreza this morning and I noticed occaisonally when holding a constant throttle around 80-85mph the car would pick up a couple of hundred rpm, then die away again.

I noticed this several times thoughout my 100 mile journey, and it's only very slight.

Any ideas what might be causing this, or is it just one of those things? It's been a few years since I last owned a turbo charged car.

I'm currently running with a malfunctioning Lambda sensor, if that makes any difference.

At 80-85 you'd be running from the lambda, so I wouldn't think about it at all until that's fixed

Ok replaced the Lambda sensor last night but it's still doing it this morning on the same journey. Constant throttle, slight surge then falls back.

Also I'm sure it was right off-boost at one point; coming off a roundabout in 2nd, squeezed the throttle and it didn't take off nearly as quickly as normal. Don't have a boost guage so don't know for sure. Was fine 2 mins later.

Any ideas?

 

The held revs in 2:nd gear thing, and low boost is a classic.
It's an evation of a noise test of some sort.

If you're going round say a roundabout at constant, middle ish revs, and booting it out it'll limit the boost to about 7-8'ish psi's.

First time it happened to me the jaw dropped...

Your oscillating thing does sound MAF related, I'd say the lambda wouldn't be relied on if you're traveling around 80, as it gets hot, and the readings from it will be more than unreliable.

Dont know if this is the same, but recently my, my93 WRX was pulling back slightly at constant speeds (50, 60, 70 etc) and then easing forward again.

Weird sensation. I booked it into the garage as its under waranty and they stripped out the coil packs clean the connection and put then back in again. Car has been fine since (about a week).

Does yours have individual coils or a single coil and HT leads?

Could either try cleaning the contacts like mine, or changing HT leads. Cars do funny things when the sparks get interupted.

I've got deltadash coming tomorrow so I'll hook that up and give it a run, then perhaps some kind folks on here can help me examine the output!

Jono; will check out the coil pack thing. No idea what configuration mine is - only had the thing since Friday!

I had a similar problem, see this thread, Buzzerboy's fix cleaning out the pipes from the boost solenoid worked a treat.

Apparently its caused by oil level being to high (says Subaru Mechanic)
Apparently there not supposed to be filled right to the max mark (says Subaru Mechanic).
