I have a MY98 Auto sportwagon.

Yesterday, after leaving SGT Taplow (Getting paint touch up pen) I noticed that everytime I went round a right hand bend the front left wheel area gave a high(ish) pitched noise, sounds like something catching slightly?

First I thought it may be a wheel bearing on the way out, but there is no play in the wheel, which is what happened in the escort when the bearing went.

Could it be the dust guard on the back for the front disc catching the disc? or have any of you experienced this?

It only happens when I am turning right, even only slightly. No noise in a staright line or going left, the noise stops if I brake while turning.

Any suggestions. Have not had a chance to get the wheel off yet, but will be doing that tomorrow, any suggestions on what to look at?

Girlfriend - yes, but not in the car at the time!!

It was something slightly more mechanical.

 

does it need discs and pads??
mine does, theres a lip on the disc which gives the same noise on corners

had this happen the last few weeks (after an enduring trip through austria ) - it will be your brake pads my friend (well was for me). Rip off the wheel and look at your brake pads. Upon new installation there are also 2 thin curved metal pieces which both hold the pads in place and also allert you when the pads become too thin. The thin metal scrapes on the disk and makes this high pitched noise. If it turns out to be this just buy a set of pads (both sides) and swap them over. Quite easy to do and will save the cost of a dealer doing it for you...

But the noise does not happen when I Brake? It is just when I corner and only right hand corners?

Had this on the rear offside. Would go round a corner and the noise would come on and after a bit it just did it when ever and very loud.
This was also the pads, but they had plently of meat on them just the backing plates had come away from the pads.

 

sounds like mine did - as others have said, the pads could be at retirement age - there's a small sticky-out bit of metal that makes a noise when the pads go down to a certain level and it can press against the disc.

Get 'em checked...
