Lift-off oversteer!!!

Hucking Fell!
Dippy, now I see EXACTLY where you were coming from on this topic. It's quite a relief to already know that you were basically OK - the pictures alone make me feel slightly sick...
FWIW I'm back on the road, but still very nervous - off to Wetter The Better this Sat which will hopefully get the confidence back & the skill levels up to scratch.
Take it easy - and look on the bright side - at least you get a new MY01 to look forward too. How long to wait?

Yup, I'm OK. I got away from that with a dozen stitches in my head. I lost consciousness when I crashed and don't remember much.
Thanks to Miles I believe I know what happened: Took a corner too fast in the wet. Oversteer/skid made me overcompensate the steering. Lift-off (and maybe brake but I can't remember) caused the front wheels to drive, thus flipping the car 180 degrees. Car slid sideways/backwards into a tree.
The airbag did not inflate since motion was not forwards. Side bags would have helped and you don't get these on the MY01 Wagon!
Miles, let me know how WTB goes. I'll go on it too but I need to get an new car yet.
I have an MY01 on reservation order (I can cancel it if I don't like the car) due Feb 2001. I'm still waiting for a test drive, hopefully sometime this month.
However having read bad reviews of the MY01's power I am also considering a BMW 330i SE Tourer...

Glad you were relatively unhurt mate, hope you and the car recover soon.
I did a similar thing to a Mx5... still not too happy about dark wet nights on the A3..
take care, Alex

Glad to know you are OK. I had a lift off oversteer incident when I first picked up my car (MY99) going over a wet roundabout. All I did was kerb my front nearside wheel and it needed a geometry alignment. Even that scared the **** out of me.
Yours must have been terrifying.

Nasty stuff dippy, glad to see you're ok.
Out of interest, how fast were you going, do you think the car stood up well to the impact, it looks like it from the pictures and the fact that you are still alive, but then again it looks like a pretty fast crash!!
The Subaru has a strong tendency to fishtail when the back breaks away too far, it's happened to me a couple of times on track, as long as you're quick to catch the biteback it's not too bad but it's always very unexpected the first time it happens to you!! Of course if you keep your foot planted you could ride out the slide in a four wheel drift but in the real world you need a lot of space to do this, so unfortunately backing off seems to be the only thing to do which causes the backend to grip and throw the car violently in the direction in which you are (counter)steering so you've got to be quick to wind back the lock and then add some back again in the other direction!!
I can confirm that the new wagon is a very nice driver, yes it needs slightly more oomph but nothing that a triple cat bypass couldn't solve, or hopefully the 01 PPP. Apparently the last of the my00 are going for very good prices now £18,995 according to another thread!!
Hope you recover quickly,
Nito
