This is quite a popular sport in Singapore, where lack of facilities and space are an issue. Superb entertainment though.

Does anyone know if there is anything like this in the UK?

With all the large superstore and supermarket car parks here, I would have thought there was plenty of opportunity for something like that.

Read This As To What Might Happen

 

There is another reason for not allowing it, you are not allowed to hold races on the public highway in Great Britain, only off-road. And car parks are public highways in eyes of the law.

 

"3. Police and community support officers must, where practicable, give a warning before seizing the vehicle."

With this new law in place do you think the police would have grounds to sieze your car if the following happened:

Exit of a roundabout away from any residential area at 3am. No cars on the road at all and you allow yourself a small rear end twitch under acceleration. A policeman comes into view and witnesses you just finish your little bit of oversteer and pulls you.

I'm not about to start condoning sliding madly around on public roads because that is lethal and this would probably frighten some motorists. However I really cannot see the problem with exploring your car on a very empty road in the middle of the night. Indeed some may argue that doing this allows to have knowledge of how your car behaves in the event of a skid in an emergency.

 

I dont think they could no, but if you went and did it on the next ten roundabouts they might have something to say about that Probably more like driving while not in complete control of your vehicle?

Not if someone scrapes or otherwise damages your immaculate parked car and does a runner without leaving a note they're not - "Errr... Nothing we can do Sir, not on the highway. You'd have to pursue a civil action, blah blah, blah".....

 

happens legally in the uk - ask your local motorsports club about autotesting - most clubs have a championship. i competed for a few years and deserted city centrecar parks are a popular venue...

 

Possibly something to do with living in a country with some of the best forest roads in existence, miles and miles of military owned, well surfaced but tricky tarmac roads, and closed public highway events available in Scotland and the Isle of Man, not to mention all of the disused airfields and proving grounds around the country.

Pretty sure the rallying fraternity would not be turned on by a thrash around B&Q car park. Leave it to the Nova boys.

 

Granite City Rally used to run a spectator stage on the Friday night round the Exhibition Centre car park. Jim Clark organisers are planning something similar in Edinburgh this year.
