Waiting for my fmic to arrive.Will fit it, have it remapped see what it does and then think about a bigger turbo.Can anyone tell me what sort of approx BHP gains I may see when fitted.I'm also going to try and get the boost turned up from about 1.25 bar to 1.4 bar at the same time.Please d'ont tell me I have to measure charge temps before and after and then do maths! Just a rough idea would be great.

Depends on your turbo size. I have seen an Impreza 2000 MY lose power with a FMIC. Turbo couldnt flow enough to even fill it (that was my interpretation anyway).

I'd get the bigger turbo first and the FMIC later on. That's what I am doing BTW

I think you will be surprised how efficient your top mount is, especially in this cool weather. My wrx ecutec with top mount is about 30degrees at the moment going down to about 16degrees on a 90mph cruise.

As said above i think you will need a bigger turbo to make use of the front mount cos i don't think you will feel a thing otherwise.

Add to this that the optimum temperature is about 38degrees (so Pat says ) i would be surprised if your running anywhere near that at the moment on the road. Admittedly after 20 minutes on a track your temps would go up though, but how often do you go on a track?

So basically on road at 1.4 bar on a VF30 I will not see any real benefit.That was a £grand well spent then.

Deep, don't worry .... with the right changes to the ecu you will see a massive difference .... the VF30 moves a decent enough air charge and you should see v good benefits.

Deep,

The FMIC will also help your engine last. FMIC should have been designed in from scratch.

Hi Moray.I know its a great safety mod especially in summer months etc but when you spend over a £grand a few extra horses does make one feel better about the investment!

I know what you mean Deep, and I would expect you should feel at least a slight improvement in torque throughout the range given your turbo isnt the weeniest ever fitted to a scooby. Also, after you have had your first engine rebuild come through, 1K on an intercooler would suddenly seem a _lot_ more reasonable.

Depends on how far you push it with the boost of course.... even an efficient turbo will still produce some pretty high turbo discharge temperatures, and a FMIC is in a completely different class at the 1.4+ bar level, even over the uprated TMICs.

Consistent charge temperatures substantially increase the consistency of ignition timing you will achieve.

At Knockhill, a typical VF based turbo of medium size tends to find its limit for retaining sensible ignition timing at 1.3 bar even with 10 degree C ambients. On a summers day it is substantially lower.

With MD304 and uprated TMIC at 1.4 bar I was hitting charge temperatures of over 50 C at Knockhill and it started detting even with quite careful (read boring) ignition timing.

On the road with a decent thrash it is not practical to run over 1.5 bar on a TMIC IMHO.

With a TD04 though a FMIC is IMHO not worth bothering with and makes it funny to drive.
