Please take it easy out there ladies and gents.

 

Try using the gears to slow down instead of the brakes and use the handbrake to avoid ABS coming on!

Don't rev too high when changing up, wheels will just spin in new gear.

If you can't get moving in first, try setting off in second!

Remember 4wd only makes a difference while your foot's off the clutch!

Do the complete opposite if you wanna have some fun

I wouldn't advise using your handbrake instead of the footbrake in order to stop ABS coming in. That's simply asking for trouble. If the ABS fuse is removed, you get brakes without ABS... which will be much safer in snow than trying to stop using the handbrake. Also, remember, apart from making the back slide, using the handbrake alone to stop might well cause the centre diff to work hard too.

Sorry, should have explained the handbrake thing a bit better!

Given that the ABS shouldn't come on if your driving safely given the conditions, sometimes you find yourself in an emergancy situation - like when soom silly old boot pulls out in front of you - the handbrake can become very usefull!

 

It is snowing wheely hard here in Ascot at the moment. My diesel escort seams to cope fairly well in the snow, but I do drive VERY cautiously in these conditions. Don't want to loose the no claims?

You need a GX with the low ratio box to stop you from getting stuck! Or does that not do what it should do?

If you drive carfully in this weather, you may still engage the ABS. If the ABS has been temporarily disabled, in these circumstances, the car will stop better (unless you are beeing a fool on sheet ice). The locked wheels will cut down through the snow and find more grip to use. This is the only reason the handbrake helps, being that it has no ABS modulation.

Unfortunately, ABS in scoobies, and most other cars, i beleive, doesn't know enough about the weather to do a good job on snow.

Just remember that the MY03 WRX, STi7 and STi8 have EBD as well as ABS. Pulling the fuse will loose you EBD as well as ABS.

A swedish motoring magazine did some tests and found disabling EBD on snow caused the rears to lock first in some circumstances causing the back to overtake the front.

Think ill try it without as the ABS is so over sensitive.

I've been out and about this evening with the ABS fuse pulled out in my MY99 Sport. Many times better without it, although I was cursing/laughing at the amazing lack of traction 205/50 R16 Toyos give in the snow and ice. We've had 3 or 4 inches in Cambridge which is fine when it hasn't been driven on. The main roads and the city centre are just thick sheets of black ice at the moment and really not very nice at all.

Ended up doing 10 miles in 2 1/2 hours! And its probably quite a bit less with all the wheel spin going on

Do be careful out there though as there are a lot of people driving too fast and too close...
