Question

OK, so I am going to buy a Scooby. I am a female who enjoys fast cars, and have now found myself in a job which pays me a generous car allowance.

I wonder how many people will think that my Scooby is my husbands/boyfriends?

Opinions please on the encroachment of women into the male world of high performance cars? I am sure I will be able to smell the testosterone (?) as I leave cars standing at the lights!!!

Cheers

No, that would be the clutch

Have a look around, there are quite a few female Scooby owners on this board already ... you could say it stopped being a "male only" thing a long time ago.

Enjoy the car & Scoobynet

You go for it. There are a few female Impreza drivers and some of them are regulars at the meets. You certainly won't regret getting a Scooby.

As to encroaching into male teritory....nah, thats note true.

Have fun.

Hi Clare
any sporty larger car like a subaru, ppl will always think its there Blokes car, as smaller sports cars like MX5's are more a womans car that THEY would buy.

but at the end of the day does it matter!? if its your car.......SO!

hay, you live near me!!!
when you get youyr car make sure u pop up to Nottm to our monthly meets, plenty of other females 4 you to meet there!
you don't have to bring your husband/boyfriend if you don't want, then we will say theres that girl with the subaru!!we say that about Lizzywizz as well! (she has Sti)

I'll just got back from the Herts scooby meet and there were to women drivers there (Hi Bex and Scoobychick BTW). I was chatting to some blokes that had driven with Michelle and they commented that she drove harder than they did.

Get the car if you want it, enjoy the car (you willl!) you are most likely to get grief from other Scooby drivers if the car stays standard spec for more than 6 months.

The opinions of other car drivers.... the don't count!

Clarebabes,

What does it matter what people think ?

You will love driving the Scooby they're great. My mate sideways (who has had more cars than chins) sold his M3 to buy one, and said it's the best car he owned.

My wife is forever taking the children seats out of her Maverik and disappearing in mine.

Do it, you know it makes sense.

Welcome to scoobynet Do it! Buy a scoob

You will not regret it I promise. If you enjoy fast cars you'll love a scoob, the grin factor is enormous Prepare to invest in mods tho', especially a full decat exhaust. I've got a scoobysport system which is as loud as a loud thing - I now drive round with my rear windows open all the time to listen to it The new stereo I put in at the same time as the exhaust has only been switched on twice!

I'm sure a lot of blokes (excepting sccobynetters of course ) do think the car belongs to your husband/boyfriend etc but who cares? Just give 'em a little wink and a wave goodbye as you accelerate away from them

You'll probably get a lot of little boys trying to race you - don't even bother, just wait till you get on the twisty bits then lose them

Scooby ownership is a wonderful thing especially if you go to meets, I've met a lot of really, really nice people at meets, including my boyfriend

Come to the scoobynet BBQ & rallyX thing and meet you'll see some really nice scoobs and meet some really nice people

Sal

Hi Clare,
Surely in these days of post Spice-girlism, the perception of a driver's gender based on the type of car they drive is a tad outdated. I would never call the Impreza a 'pretty' car, (that might open the floodgates!) It is masculine, butch if you will, and I'm sure if there were complete demographic figures on ownership, the vast majority would be male. Having said that, if you've driven the car and you like it, buy it!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I would like to get involved in the social activities of car ownership and look forward to meeting you all as and when.

There is one thing bothering me about Scooby ownership, and that is the amount of motion potion you have to put in it. OK, I have a Ford Probe at the moment, (no jokes please, they are very unique), and I am getting about 35 miles to the gallon unless I really thrash it. What mpg can I realistically expect from a Turbo if most of my driving is motorway/dual carriageway???

Thanks in advance.....

Clare

15 to 30 MPG is realistic but the grin factor is always worth a minimum of an extra 5MPG.

Welcome clare. Like the others have said there are plenty of women driving scoobs. Some are a damn site better at it than the blokes too.

If you drive mainly dual cariageway/motorway then you should be aiming for 22-25MPG. If you are very gentle then 30MPG is possible but not many can resist sticking their foot in.

Hi Clare,

Expect 10 to 15 MPG or worse if you come along to one of our meets (like the most excellent Welsh Camping Trip 3 this weekend).

Hi Clare,

Welcome to Scoobynet

I have been on the board a while, I drive an MY94 WRX in silver that is pretty rapid. I attend as many meets as possible.........I drive hard and fast, most of the guys do say I drive quicker than them....

You will find it great on here, lots of friendly peeps, plenty of friendly banter and advice. In all it has been great from when I first came on here.

Scooby ownership is even better, you still get amazed looks from lads who see that there is a female in the driver's seat The car itself is a pleasure to drive although expensive!!!

Drop by on a meet, would be great to meet you.

Safe driving and take care.

Michelle.

Hi Clare

I have had loads of fast cars over the years and these guys are no trouble at all Infact with most cars the only problems I have had are from guys that try to show off but havnt got a clue and I have taken great delight in showing them up

I drive a MY01 wagon and return about 25 mpg round town, about 28 to 30 mpg motorway driving and about 15 mpg on the circuit. It also runs much better on SUL/Optimax which is a little bit dearer - I think it is a price well worth paying, but then I dont do a huge milage.

Happy motoring

Girls are great.

Girls in fast cars are even better.

Girls in NOMEX racing suits make me walk into things. BANG.

so, get yourself on some track-days ASAP,... you'll get so much more from the car, and really understand what this superb car is all about.

Clare

I do mainly motorway/dual carriageway driving myself, and am getting about 26-27mpg taking it easy. I tend to take my time going to/from work unless I need to blow off steam, and try to save a bit of fuel for when I'm on decent twisties instead.

On a long run to London I got 33mpg, sticking to 80mph most of the way.

If you boot it everywhere you can get silly mpg, likewise if you use high rpms a lot. My last car was a rev-happy 205 Gti so it took me a while to adjust to the scoob, now I stay between 3 - 5.5k rpm and use the midrange torque. Driving it this way helps the mpg and is still ridiculously quick on the twisties, as the scoob's power (at least on a standard car) tails off after 5.5 - 6k anyhow.

The only problem is that I'm doing more miles all of a sudden, finding excuses to go for a spin. Done about 3,000 miles in 2 months (wassat then? 18k a year) as opposed to about 10k a year in the 205!

Sooner or later you just forget about the mpg, laugh at the fuel guage as it drops before your very eyes and get on with driving the damn thang!

Girls driving scoobies!!!!

How ridiculous is that???

The scooby is a drivers car which requires a modicum of hand eye coordination not too mention spatial awareness!!!!

Subaru ownership and this BBS membership is thankfully no discriminator in terms of age sex sexual orientation etc etc - and long may it stay so. Life is all about working out what you want and then go getting it - before you get too old to do it. Enjoy !!

Go for it Clarebabes.

Think how much better it is for us sad old men in Scoobies getting waved at by a girl in another Scoob rather than a bloke!

Just thinking about it is enough to get me zimmer frame vibrating!
