help memory has gone re read road tax

i'm getting old!! not helped by knocking myself out when i came off my mountain bike.my memory is aweful.
question do the dvla notify you road tax is due?
or do you just troll along to the post office and pay up there and then
i guess there must be a form to fill in somwhere.
My road tax runs out the end of this month and i cant remeber what i did last year.
Help pls.
