How many ss tailpipes are going gold in colour but will clean back to silver with a lot of effort ?

Afraid mine just goes black! Maybe I don't get it hot enough.

 

Just a bit of tee cut brings the shine back without any effort.

The reason the SS tail pipe goes gold is the increasing thickness of the protective oxide layer due to being heated in air. Its especially visible on motorbikes. As the thickness of the oxide layer coincides with the wave lengths of the light, different colours are seen. Its sometimes use as a way of determining the thermal history of the a material.

I have the same problem but clean it up with Brasso for chrome and silver....effortless
