that may be an economical & insurable car to you; however maybe your other car is an f40 ?

The mk3 Golf TDi could be an option, not sure of its towing ability...

Volvo V40 is a Mitsubishi Carisma underneath. I think you're better off looking to VAG for diesels -- Audi A4 Avant?

Question

ok, i think i'll soon be in the market for a tow-car, which will also be used as the main (or only road) car (so will also be used for shopping, travelling a to b, getaway car from bank jobs, ramraids and the like).

Kind of thinking of a volvo v40 - 2litre turbo diesel, 5K will get me a 70K miler P plate.

Anyone owned one of these ? or have any other suggestions. Really just interested in a TD estate with comfort, reliability and if poss, fairly economical and easily insurable - so dont suggest a max'd up wagon with a tow-bar

If everything goes to plan it will be used to tow a cat 7 or similar, a couple of 'bikes and maybe a dinghy (not all at the same time though....)

Fingers on the buzzers...

Depending on budget, 330d will be almost in beatable as a tow car and give give plenty of non-towing enjoyment

yeah - i'm really not fussed about on road ability. I drive like a wuss on the road anyway.

I've had a couple of folk mention that the v40 and carisma share floorpans and the like, as if this is a bad thing. Is there actually anything wrong with these ? (no worse than your VAG car sharing with a skoda...)

Bloke at work has a diesel v40 company car (no luck). It's definately of the old skool diesel variety i.e. slow and noisy.
Otherwise it's ok, but I'd look elsewhere.
VAG and Peugeot diesels spring to mind.

mmm... yeah, the passat may be the way to go. i reckon the vag & peugot diesel are the best bet, but i'm not so convinced about the rest of the car (especially the pug) - remember we're talking about a P or R plate, so a few years old with some mileage.

Or maybe stuff the diesel idea and go for a petrol volvo.

Funny - this is harder than picking a performance car, because there is far less information...

Not sure of pulling power, but the 406 diesel just got a damn good write up in I think Car mag. Poxy residuals means you could pick up a newer one too. Granted, not sure it would last as long as the others.
