avoid SL50 like plague

best thing to do is ensure the right oil goes in.

Fully synthetic 15/50 or 20/60

Honestly, yes.

any 0/XX oil is too thin really. I use Mobil1 15/50 which I find good, quieter engine (tappet noise on Legacy engine is bad) smoother, but a little costly.

I do my own changes (8 year old car), so it's more economic. I bought 2x4L first of all (expensive!) but now I have a part filled bottle to top up the last 0.5 litre (comes in 4l bottles, engine takes 4.5, aaargh).

You can also get Motul 300v 15/50 (from demon tweeks and others) Castrol RS 20/60 and possibly some amsol stuff.

Plenty of people swear by the Motul and Mobil.
