MY01 - how many miles left when petrol light comes on?
On my way to work today and petrol light comes on, thought I had nearly half a tank but was looking at temp. level
Have done a further 2.5 miles since light came on, nearest petrol station that sells SUL (that I know of) is about 8.5 miles away near my home.
If I drive conservatively, as I always do
will I make it?
Cheers
Chris

You'll also find that you might not be able to get the last couple of litres out of the fuel tank. It's a saddle tank design (ie two tanks), and the fuel pick-ups aren't right at the very bottom of the tank.
My car started spluttering a bit about 25 miles after the low warning light came on, got it into the petrol station, and could only get 57 litres in, and filled it up as far as it would go without overflowing.

Bank on 30 and you'll be ok. Assume 40 and you may have a long walk....
Agree tho - 10 litres left. But my light sometimes comes on "a bit l8" so i have 5 litres left (unless my other half pops out without me knowing
)

Thanks for the help,
When I get to the petrol station I should have only covered about 11-13 miles since the light came on so hopefully will be enough.
Neil - I don't make a practice of running tank down to the dregs, I was just being extremely thick this morning, hadn't quite woken up
Cheers

I had this problem after blasting around fife with John Banks, he assured me I'd have enought to get back to S Queensferry to the Shell and in the end was right. I was however panicing a little when the needle had gone off the empty 'white line' and way into the black
Chris,
Not singling you out. Just putting a small note of warning for muppets who wait until the fuel light goes red and then drives around seeing how far they can go before conking out.
I generally never let it go below a qtr full. Optimax can be hard to find

You will find that when it starts getting real low, that when you go round left hand bends the engine will start to miss and hiccup.
But that happens after a good few miles with the light on and once the needle has gone off the scale.
Gives you a scare cause you think its gonna stop and make you walk!!
Good indication that fuel is starting to get real low!

Just a word of warning it not good to let them get too low and still drive the car hard. If you are cornering hard then the fuel moves about and can mean you potentially get fuel starvation as the pickup cant get the fuel and as Neil says you can get teh crap off the bottom of the tank in your fuel filters. I tend to fill up just after it has gone below 1/4 full and have only seen the light come on once.
I think it was the new style dash when they introduced the fuel light to UK models, i.e. the ones with factory white dials and the speedo in the centre with a smaller revcounter on the right.
Just had my car back from a service with the fuel light on which wasn't on when I left the car ( I made the mistake of not knowing the exact mileage). For various reasons I couldn't fill up until 40 miles later, so depending on how many miles the Subaru mechanics screwed the car for it could be around 45 - 50.
