I used to work in an EMC dept(Electro magnetic compatibility) at NCR (ATM - cash machines). Sorry to tell you this mate but the problem lies with you. Static electricity builds up inside the body naturally, the body acting as a massive capacitor. In certain weather conditions linked with certain types of fabric the static production is enhanced within the body. It has been known for a man during low pressure weather in Canada to discharge over 50,000 volts into an ATM disabling it and the banks computers !!
So think yourself lucky that you only manage a small blue spark - start to worry when you can do it a few inches from the car !!!!
Change your shoes and yes fleeces don't help.

Getting it alot recently, Normally I don't mind but even my dog gets whacked when he climbs out. (kinda funny seeing an alsatian get a static shock )

Any remedies, apart from one of those daft strips

as you get out of the car hold on to the metal of the door before you put your foot to the floor, this will earth the car without you feeling it, try it, it really does work

Only works for yourself of course, but before you get out (keeping your back in contact with the backrest) put your palm on the A pillar exterior metal before putting your foot on the ground. That should help a bit.

Leaves hand prints but should save you some shocks before you get the "daft strips"!!

Same theory as glen's suggestion - bloody phones disrupting playtime, slowing already slow typing!

Stop wearin fleeces and rubber sole shoes and you should be alright. My girlfriend once opened the door as i was standing outside and i kid you not a blue bolt shot out to the closest target - me plums!!! Now thats something you'd normally pay someone a lot of money to do to you - but i'd recommend you dont try children.

One of those strip things touching the floor worked for me!!

Yep get that all the time.

As said above don't let go of the car and then re-touch to close the door or what ever.

Keep one point of contact and you should be ok?

In my old job, the call centre I worked in had an office with really long an lush carpets (one of the Board rooms). Me and my team of 4 staff were shipped into the room as part of a brainstorm team who were left in charge of the Internet booking solution and customer sevices project for the company.
If you rubbed your feet along the floor for 5 yards you were then "mr electric" and the friction would produce a charge. No-body could work out how I was producing this electricity and every time someone did something wrong I would touch them on the ear or neck, or knee...and ZAP.....have it!

They loved me really, but after a few days all of a sudden they started behaving themselves and cutting down on Net Browsing for 5 hours a day. The called me Voltage Boy.

 

I get this all the time too.
(Closing door, opening boot etc)

I now only touch the door handle to shut the door (is it made of plastic?) - seems to work...

P.S. the Dog is probably getting the remnants of your discharge..oooer. And no he doesn't need special shoes.
The discharge strips allow the charge to move from you into the car and then into the ground...remembering that cars sit on rubber anyway..what you experience is the ability for your body to store electricity, first hand as it were !!!...EwanS

Ewan, could this be why sometimes on stage, I get a hum/buzz through my amplifier sometimes that seems to be totally intermittent?
