OK, here's a hypothetical question.

You are not subject to any speed limits, but all other things are equal. What car would you buy?

All other things are equal. You have the same disposable income (rules out Macca F1 for most of us), same need (or not) for transporting kids, fuel is the same price, you still have to do your daily mileage. And you don't have any more parking space than now (so no "5 car" answers!). Everyone else is subject to speed limits, so if you buy a 200mph monster you won't get very far on the M25, at least in the daytime, and a Ferrari will still cost most of us too much in maintenance.

Would you keep the Scoob, for practicality? Get a Porsche to do 170mph when the road is clear? Get a Cater/field for doing 90 in 30 zones?

Without doubt a Cater/field. Probably an R300. Its probably about as much fun as you could have, fast and nimble enough to weave in and out of traffic a lot. Plus it looks cool....:-)

So you are asking the scooby owning public if they regret buying their car? I mean it's a really odd question isn't it? I presume most of the people who bought the scoob did so because it was their ideal car taking into account their own circumstances. All you are suggesting is a private immunity from speeding fines, how could that change someones decision, which I'm sure wasn't governed at all by the current speeding laws.

chuckster, it is an odd question, but it's linked to the comment that arises on here about "usable speed/power" and "in the real world". People will talk about their cars and then complain they can't use all the power. I'm asking "what if you could, then which would you choose?"

Ahhh! I ride a bike to get use of power in the real world - dead easy to overtake anything in traffic. I've always considered the 22 more 'fun' than something like a P1 precisely because in the 'real world' it's more fun driving it at 7/10ths than a P1 - because the 22 is less well set up for British B roads, ultimately there are faster point to point cars, but do they 'feel' as fast? Thats also why I prefer the Elise to the Exige - no top means a much greater perception of speed = more fun at any given speed.

Perception is great. My Dutton (crap Cater/field imitation) felt rocket fast, but I kept getting blown away at the lights by 1.6 Sierras...

But when you get on a plane you go really really fast - it's still not fun. I like corners, I have lots of lowdown turbo charged torque. I think of all cars on the market a SUbaru lets u use mroe of the power more of the time than 99pct of cars for similar money(that can do the same job ie carry 4 people and loads of garbage).
Going any faster on a motorway ain't more fun, and how fast you go on a B road is dictated more by corners and hazzards than speed limits/cars top speed. I still don't think your question makes sense.

In summary - speed limits are not a factor to be considered at all when buying a car. If the limits were removed, I can't see how anyone choosing a Subaru would want to pick a different car to take advantage of that, as only straight line top speed would have to be factored additionally into the equation, and scoobs have never been about that.

I don't understand the point of the question
The implication is that there are people who currently have a Scoob not because it's quick, cheap, and has four doors and a boot, but because it only does 140mph (twice the speed limit). The further implication is that if the speed limit was higher, they would have bought a car with a higher top speed

Is there really anyone on here like that?

I feel that most of us are not governed by speed limits anyway (speed cameras maybe ) we do thirty in the thirty zone because it's the sensible thing to do and when the road opens up so does the throttle.
Mind you the police are always in the rear of our minds ( or in my case the rear view mirror ) because of some dickensian speed limit set in the sixties when cars couldn't do more than 70 safely.

Out here I have a number of friends who are diplomats. They're fairly normal people with normal salaries and normal lives, but their cars have CD plates, so they are effectively exempt from all rules of the road (NB not condoning hit-and-run, just Up Yours Gatso). They are out for a 2-3 year posting, then off somewhere else, and usually they get a chunky discount off new cars for being diplomats, like 10-30%. So I was thinking, if you had such status, how would you make the most of it? Still the scoob, or something sillier, just Because You Can?

 

But the point is, for the money there's not much sillier than a JDM STI. Only above 100mph does something of equivalent cost (330ci bm? - no even thats alot more expensive) go much quicker. In other words even a 'lowly' scoob can do 120mph through most 30 mph zones, the only thing it can't do is compete over 120mph - and the only time that has any relevance is on boring straight roads.
