To Quickshift or not?

Considering fitting a quickshift to reduce the throw of my gearlever...

What are the pros (other than less movement on thge lever) / cons of doing this?

Which one is the one to go for and how much should I be paying?

Can I fit this myself?

Pro's....makes the box feel nice and tight

Cons....can beat the synchro's if you change gear too quick.

Can make 1st and 2nd more difficult to get into if you have problems just now.

What one?....personal opinion... much of a muchness, buy as cheap as possible (2ndhand) or alter your own

Yep, self fit.

Ive read the MY99 and 00 cars dont see much improvement with these but the one i tried recently felt amazingly short throw...

When you say you can do yourself, do you mean slice a bit off the lever? I assumed there was a bit more science to it than this, like the bottom bit would be extended so that for small movemnet on the top the bottom bit would pivot more and this provide a shorter throw?

Agreed secondhand seems a good bet if all it is a short lever...

Question

I've seen a description of how to saw off about 25mm of the top of the gearlever shaft. Does this work? I'd sure hate to try it and find it was a bollox.

To me it just sounds like itd make the lever shorter, I would have thought the proper kit would create some kind of mechanical advantage by moving the pivot point...

The quickshift lever has it's bracket welded in a different position to the std lever to reduce the throw.

Shortening the std lever won't *really* make much of a difference.

If you can weld, you can modify the std lever yourself. If you can't, buy a quickshift and fit it yourself.

Fitted a "Jap technologies" quick shift.£60??? Fantastic. Sold the car and new owner likes it. It is a great idea. Cutting the gear leaver down just makes it look nicer.
