freeswerve was playing up a lot for me recently - don't know if any of you guys are on it ?

Don't talk to me about Freeswerve - have used it for the last 2 yrs on a Win 98 Dell - just changed our PC for a new Dell P4 1.5ghz and Windoze 2000 - now if you start the PC up from cold, you can log on to Freeserve OK, if you come out of Freeserve (it releases the phone line ok) but leave the PC up and try and get back into Freeserve it just goes on checking the password indefinitely.

If you shut the PC down and start up again it is ok every time. Any offers???

 

sounds like typical dell to me

do what I did and switch to BT adsl :-)

Have you done the Freeserve 'number switcher' that is available from their service status page?

Yup. Even got an alternative number they don't publicise. Still hangs.

I don't think it is the line. It worked with the last PC. It must either be a faulty modem, DUN settings or Win 2000 doesn't like Freeserve or vice versa......

Looks like a few hours will disappear over the weekend trying to get to the bottom of it....

I'm on a BT ISDN line with BT connect as my ISP.

No probs with any sites that I regularly visit but I still can't find 22b.com

Any other ideas?

Error I got is:

RichS, how much do you pay for BT ISDN cos, we moved to adsl and the rental halved, and connection speed was 10 times faster. Yes it is supposed to drop with multiple users but it has never gone below 8 times faster.

And then we dont pay call charges anymore.

Tried 22B.com from home (BT Openworld), and from work (last night/today). It is definately dead - DNS is resolved, but pings fail .

ADSL is very cool, although the contention ratio of 50/1 (or 20/1 for the more expensive options) will slow things down. It is usually way cheaper than ISDN too, but you will have problems converting your ISDN installation. Maybe better to order a new line and then cancel ISDN.

Luckily the average age of residents in my area is 90 so I get all the bandwidth to myself .

As you can see, my server resolves it correctly. Therefore the problem is with the domain. Could it be that it expired on 14-March ?

I tried using the IP address Lee gave but also get the same message "HTTP 500".

Oh, there you go, your server is authoritative for the domain so it ought to be resolving correctly! I guess that the NS records from the .com TLD have been dropped, and that is why most of the world can't "see" it

Our ISDN connection is part of a BT business highway, so I've got multiple devices plugged into it.

I did look at ADSL some time ago, but there was some reason why I was better off staying with my current setup. (It's Friday, I've had a hard day and I'd damned if I can remember the costs or the reason not to change)

Probably worth revisiting though.

We're unmetered too...

Hi All!

For the benefit of those who want to look at 22b.com while there is a TLD problem, I have setup my server as a slave and am running a proxy on it (squid).

To use it, just set your proxy server to nanobyte.demon.co.uk port 8080 for FTP HTTP and SSL. Just don't leave it set at that indefinitely, I am only on a poor 64kbps line y'know!

22B.com used to be hosted by ITWW or "IT world wide" which was fine whilst Steven Dunton was in charge.

Steven Spicer took over after Steven Dunton moved onto higher paid and more demanding IT roles.

Steven Spicer is a star, not only did he "do a runner" owing me a months heavily subsidised rent on my flat in London he can't even work out how to maintain a Domain registration fee.

To say I am not impressed is an understatement

 

Sadly, because someone forgot to refresh the domain, and because those nice people at Infopop decided to break just about every rule in the book with regard to website design, the only way to keep 22B.com visible until the TLD is refreshed is to use a proxy which can resolve bbs.22b.com itself.

If those nice people at Infopop had used root relative rather than absolute self referencing URLs then I could have mapped 22b.com into some of my own domain space with Apache's mod_proxy, which would have been much less effort, at least for the users since then they could just access it under a different URL rather than having to update their proxy settings.

I think that most nameservers must now have expired their cached copies of 22b.com hosts since there is no new traffic on bbs.22b.com (which is still there, just in hiding ). What is scary is how long the records have lingered in nameservers across the internet!

Apoligies to anyone that came to ITWW last year when I was running things. Unfortunatly as Anders says better prospects were on the horizon so I had to jump ship.

The new manager is very new at the hosting game as so gets confused easily because of this 90% of the customers complained to me, so they moved on to SIWD (http://www.siwd.net) all of them contacted me again and said the service level was back to it's usual levels (Cheers Lee!)

If you are still with ITWW, and are getting p*ss*d off, give Lee a shout and I'm sure he'll sort it.
