Default Close call...brake failure

Had a lucky one this morning after running my daughter the 26 round mile trip to school, early for a school trip. I went to get the MOT done at 8am, and the tester had a total brake failure whilst driving round the industrial estate.... Goodridge braided hose had rubbed clean through on the rear nearside, and it turned out that the other side was on its way; it could have happened anywhere. So just have a look at your braided lines; they aren't indestructible and I would hate this to happen to someone else. They were about 4 years old, rubbed on the arch bulkhead, and the damage was not visible, apart from rubs on the underseal. The tester said he had never seen braided hose rub through, ever, but had it not burst the car would have passed, as all brake tests were good. He is also a very thorough man.
Thanks to Triton at Hurn, for sorting it out on the spot, after recovery there.

Wow close call!

Had my brakes go on my Manta Berlinetta back in the 80s lol, one of the copper pipes for the front brakes just popped straight out of the master cylinder, instant no brakes at all!

Even though it happened to the tester, not me, I drove it about 400m to see if I could get it fixed up the road, and it was not at all funny.... at 10mph. I had been on fast B roads and a dual carriageway just before, so it is real food for thought. I`ll be going that little bit slower for a while.

As a matter of interest , what is their lifespan? Or is that a length of string question?

They should last forever , the ones we use come with a lifetime guarantee , obviously not for circumstances like the OP's

as above have we have dealt with Goodridge for 15yrs+ and never had a simple hose failure even on competing cars - we have seen various issues caused by incorrectly fitted and installed hoses though

Wow that was a lucky escape
But don't dwell on what could have happened or you'll never enjoy driving again. Brake system failures are rare

I've had total brake fade twice in competition, road rallys hurtling down B roads once in a scooby and the worst was in my nova going down a 1:4 hill to a T junction, it's pretty hairy trying to stop a car on just the handbrake I can tell you.
