I'm looking in forging a version 2 closed deck engine out of a jdm gc8 4door with a 5speed short ratio box?

What do I need to do to get it reliable and running 400-450bhp reliably?

I will be doing it over a year and il probably be asking my local tuning shop indigo gt to build the engine.

I'm a newbie to all of this

Why not save yourself a large wedge of cash and aim for about 350bhp, it's about perfect in a Classic and plenty fast enough AND usable, once you start heading for 400+ it gets very expensive and they start to become un-usable on the road.

Unless your planing on tracking it and properly caning the **** out of it you're better off either not starting it or buying one that someone else has done.

 

To give you a straight forward answer to the question-
steel rods and forged pistons, you will need V3/4 sti heads to get enough flow. ARP headstuds and decent gaskets Cosworth/RCM. That will give you an engine capable, the cost starts to shoot up with turbo, injectors etc.

Obviously I'd have to have a look at the drive train to because I've heard the gearbox' sand diffs are made of cheese

 

Yes you missed 6 speed box setup, clutch, decent brakes and some decent suspension too but Paulo P's estimate is in the right ball park

The brief for my build was 400 capable but I wont be asking more than 350 from it. Once you get above the 300bhp mark you're in gearbox wrecking territory. I stopped counting what I've spent on the car long ago.
