Default Anyone else get shafted for insurance on JDM cars?

Just wondering if any of you JDM owners are paying a lot more for insurance than those with UK cars? I currently have a 1997 UK Turbo and have been looking at changing up to a nice Type RA that's for sale close to me. It's totally standard and in very good shape with low miles. So, I checked out the insurance before doing anything and was pretty taken back that a lot of companies won't quote at all and the ones that do are silly money. I live in Northern Ireland which for some reason means my insurance is always more expensive anyway but it's almost double that of what I'm paying for the UK Turbo.

I'm with Direct Line on my 95 STI wagon and the insurance was a bit cheaper than a UK car!.. It seems most of the big companies don't get as excited as they used to about imports these days, but I guess some will still load the premiums just because they can.

Shop around, but I understand insurance is much more expensive over in NI so it may be a different ball game over there?..

I live in Northern Ireland too. Get in touch with greenlight as I pay half as much as anything from a compare site. Plus it's mods declared

No difference here. I am now on my 6th JDM and never been quoted anymore than the UK versions I had.

Thanks for the replies folks. I'll give the two companies mentioned a shout. I really like this RA and my UK car needs work done to get rid of rust. I'd rather break it and help pay towards the other car if I could.

Not the case anymore, insurance goes up every year, once i hit 30 i couldnt wait for the price to drop, turns out it went up as it does every year since. Insurance is a rip off, its just a case of who shafts you the least.

My insurance hasn't gone up for a good few years.... it's come down.

I was paying (until I swapped it out this year) £295 for a 500bhp JDM Hawkeye.

All with Keith Michaels.

Thanks everyone. I went on to the Greenlight website and tried an online quote late on last night, they couldn't quote. Gonna have to ring them. Keith Michaels next!

The day before my 30th birthday I was quoted £1200 comprehensive and on my birthday it went down to £560. Maybe because of where I live is also affecting the quote, statistics for the area and all that.

its pointless comparing insurance as its not only the car but the area and individual that all come into consideration.

a jdm car shouldnt cost anymore to insure than a uk car through a specialist.

Yeah I'm not wanting to compare quotes, as you say all the various factors affect it hugely. I was just checking if other people were being quoted/paying a lot more for JDM. Seems that some people pay a little more, which would be fine, but I would be paying around £400 more per year. Not on! I'll have to contact a specialist as you mentioned.

well if it helps i found that after the first year off owning an impreza the premium went down a lot.

but also i found keith michaels reduced it a lot too, i have been with them for a few years and never claimed so i guess this helps but im now on £400 a year all mods declared for my blob sti which i think is excellent

Mine only went down about £80 after the first year but I only have 1 year no claims (2 shortly). I've been in a company car for 14 years, so no personal no claims until I bought my old classic. Keith Michaels it is then, hopefully it'll be good news!
