So iv just left a deposit for this engine il be picking up that has been freshly rebuilt and not run I and the description is as follows. Iv agreed 1600 and iv been given warranty but iv never heard of the builder fr anyone or any forums so I'm Abit nervous on the quality of it, can anyone help? this is for a superb chance to get a rebuilt subaru impreza sti engine. this came originally from a genuine year 2004 sti 8 car but is the exact same engine fitted in all newage 2 liter sti's.
the engine has had everything done to it, starting at the bottom end-the blocks have been acid dipped which is a process using light acid to strip all crap off without touching the base metal, nothing and no method cleans like this and gives a great start to the build and piece of mind that theres no little bit of metal going to destroy the new engine, as you can see the blocks look like new and thats the same inside and in all the oil ways you cant see or get to like most engine builders.
the crank has been thoroughly checked and measured and then repolished and is in perfect working order and well within the required tolerances to use. the con rods again are chemically cleaned to remove mainly carbon from previous running, they are checked over and measured to make sure are fit for use. they are put together using only the best bearings available which is acl race series mains and big end bearings- alot of people to cut corners only fit acl big ends as the subaru mains dont give trouble but this is obviously bad practice. the acl race bearings give a far better and desireable running clearence to the crank for the subaru engine over standard bearings and are of much higher quality than standard.
the blocks and all other sealed areas are done with genuine subaru tri-bond grey sealer, not some cheap silicon sealer that wont last and breaks off clogging up the oil pick up pipe in the sump which i see time and time again when i strip failed engines.
the pistons are genuine hf4 sti forged pistons, again chemically cleaned and then, as i am a official rep for piston dry film coater, the pistons have the anti friction/ high pressure dry film coating reapplied and oven baked to bring them back to as new condition- this is the same film coating as used by mahle pistons, the pistons used are genuine sti forged items as are fitted standard on this engine and where fitted with a brand new set of rings.
all the parts are assembled using motul mpz engine build lubricant which is basically a very thick high pressure oil and purpose made so that it stays on the bearings and faces where its appliedand will never run out like normal oil would, they say it wll stay where it is for over 10 years, so an engine can be left unrun for 10 yearsand then on first start up will still give maximum protection whilst the oil pump primes itself. most people just use normal engine oil which runs out in time and more importantly only offers very limited protection on first start up when its needed the most.
the sti avc cylinder heads have been fully rebuilt, starting with stripping them down, pressure testing them for leaks. skimming them and cleaning them, all the valves are cleaned and checked and then relapped in to ensure a good seal,the heads are assembled and reshimmed to the correct running gaps. the heads are bolted up using genuine cometic steel head gaskets which are known for being the best you can get.
the next part is a genuine roger clark motorsport high pressure modified oil pump- these are fast getting a massive following and almost everyone rebuilding is using them, with slightly higher oil pressure and the modified relief valve so as to not stick in operation which cause a high percentage of engine failures.
the engine also benefits from a new cambelt, all idlers are checked and replaced if required and the water pump has come from a rally car build that was delivery milage only.
the inlet manifold is only nipped on and has new gadkets fitted incase you just want to swap your whole manifold over or if you collect and bring with, I'll fit there and then for you. only a few bits need swapping from your old engine and away you go.
lastly the engine has had a baffled oil control plate fitted into the sump which again are worth the weight in gold to help with the subaru oiling problem, i have run these on 600bhp plus cars on the track with no problems and i wouldnt have an engine of this quality go without one so have fitted one prior to selling the engine.
this engine is a really good genuine build, no short cuts taken. to have a build of this quality done by anyone would cost an absolute fortune and you would have to give them a motor to start with- this engine was a genuine version 8 red top sti engine. dont buy a second hand unknown engine and take a chance- get this rebuilt one for piece of mind and add value to your car. when selling it, everyone knows that these engines give trouble and you would be head and shoulders above other cars with this rebuilt engine- its the first thing people ask. full receipt included for work done with loads of build pictures for your records. any inspection welcome. email any questions, thanks

Not bad for a refreshed engine, A couple of points though, An STI8 does not have forged pistons it has cast Hypereutectic pistons which are an alloy and silicone mix...The forged ones were on the STI 7, Has he supplied any build pictures or tolerances /measurements etc as re-using a crank from an engine which has obviously failed in the past does get frowned upon for the cost of replacing it for a new one, I`d also ask about the modine if thats new too...Lastly the STi block is a Semi closed one anyway so no addition there...As a rough guide you would pay around £1200 for one similar from a breakers car that has not been refreshed.

The way i lok at it is this.You have taken the chance on a rebuilt engine by somebody you havent heard of. If the engines still running in say 5 years time , with no issues, then you would consider it a successful outcome and no doubt be telling everyone about the builder. He will gain customers and experience, good or bad, but at the end of the day, if nobody tries different people to do stuff like this , reputations cant be made , good or bad. Even the best engine builders,mappers or watever, had to start somewhere. Idoubt if hell be round long if his works not good. Either way, keep us informed as to how it works out

It's impossible to say if the build is good or bad, he is using the right bits in terms of rebuild but there is NO way that is a 600 BHP engine. Using standard semi closed deck block, standard Pistons and standard rods does not give you an engine capable of that power level. In my opinion for an engine to have a chance of lasting at that power level it needs to be a closed deck block, either a 2.0lt, 2.2lt or a 2.5lt with a closed deck insert. It would need a heat treated crank, proper rods and proper Pistons.

That said you won't build that spec of engine for the price quoted for this rebuild. What this is, is a refresh of a standard STI engine, the price is not unreasonable for the work done.

 

Its knowing if the build is spot on and trusting the person that hes done it right. I would prefer a specialist though

 

Maybe try the LADS or north wales or Manchester clubs to see if anyone has heard if him as they are the most local clubs to southport
