TD05 16g fake or genuine?
How much you want for yours
Hi there
Looks like its fake,if you want to be sure, get this turbo at least balanced and check'd if its OK
Usually those turbo have bad seals and they're not properly balanced to allowed tolerance and still I would check if wastegate flap will close properly etc
Hope this help
Thanks,Jura

Turbo isn't being fitted, been safe and asked opinions...so I've lost a little bit of money...better than losing my engine

TD05 how to spot a fake?
However ,
The TD05 turbo 16g ( S/H ) is now hard to obtain as you need to find someone taking it off / breaking an older car. Basically anything that looks new and is less than 500 pounds is a fake. However , fake is not just fake the problems are many and Jura has mentioned some but the balance of the shaft is critical .
My fake came with a graphed / protocoled vibration test is also from China, and yours looks very similar to mine.
For kicks I asked a Chinese colleague of mine to read the "certificate" he said to me the Chinese writing says "This is to certify that this Turbo xxxx will fit to a Japanese car. and was manufactured origin PRC Shanghai" and has been packed by t.wong ".
I was sold this as a TD05 B 16G now I m not so sure that it is.
However I think what you have to consider here is you will not get anything new for less than you just paid. I do business with our factory in Shanghai all the time Logistics for sourcing of spares on suface mount printing machines. I used to be a quality manager for Tyco electronics , i can tell you most of the European car manufacturers do now source parts in PRC . The main problem is the Chinese appreciation of quality control.
So when you buy something you have to take a close look at it before you fit it. In my case I took emery paper to the rough lip infront of the blade (see photo) to smooth it out ,I did a bit of work on the gate which was not closing properly (like jura mentioned ) I have also had to throw off the WGA as its a standard TD04 item that's not matched for a TD05 turbo to run boost >20 psi as it starts to open at 5-6 psi , hence why I posted yesterday the link to COBB site showing checks needed to test it to see when it opens before you fit it .
You may also find that the water feed pipes will not fit under the housing on top of the manifold , I modified my TD04 pipes to fit the TD05 , by boring out the unions (which are smaller than the TD05 and filing them down flat. ) But finally it did work and it is capable of good power.
Would I advise others to go through all the re-enginering
, absolutely not. But Im on a tight budget. So its Hobsons choice for me .
