Question

Hi, I fancy getting tickets for the Trax2001 day at Silverstone and entering into the novice track event that Stef has given out details on.
I am driving a Impreza Turbo MY00 with no mods. Would it be stupid to enter with a standard spec car. Or would it be best to upgrade some of the car parts first, if so which parts would you suggest?.
I have never done a track day before so will be driving very slowly. Also I live in Cornwall which means I am unlikely to be doing another track event in the near future. Therefore I do not want to spend more than I need too.

Any help would be appreciated before I try to get hold of the tickets.

Cheers.

Get the tickets first They'll probably go like hotcakes!

It's not a problem to use a standard car. The main thing you have to worry about are brakes. If you intend to get serious about these things (but seeing the rest of your post, probably not) then its worth upgrading. There are some cheap but effective mods than can give you increased braking ability, maybe worth it anyway just for day to day stuff. As to any other mods - why not enjoy the car you have, its up to the job. Just don't worry if other people with similar cars seem to go past you - they will & you don't know what they're running. Its a fun day & is meant to be an experience not a race. Take it at your own pace.

There is an excellent post by John Felstead that someone will put up about preparation of your car before an event. It should be in a FAQ somewhere & I keep forgetting to bookmark it Someone post it please!

See you there Rob

Rob,

Took my car (totally standard my00) to Snetterton for a track day last year for the first time.

Had a great time, the car had no problems other than the brakes faded big time after a couple of quick (for me!) laps.

My advice, build yourself up slowly, mind your mirrors (there can be some real quick cars out there) and take advantage of any tuition that's available.

Have fun,

Paul.

Rob

I've just done Castle Combe and my car is all but standard apart from exhaust & air filter.
I found my standard brakes were up to the job but then it was my first track day

Just go and enjoy yourself I know I did.

-why not try an airfield day first. easytrack and Motorsprort-events run days nr Swindon amd include track tuition, have a look at their sites, Airfields are grat for the novive plenty of run off area, no chance of damaging the car

Cool

Rob,

did my first trackday at Dono last week. I too have a standard car (moreorless) ... some tips passed on to me ....

get some tuition if you can.

get some passenger rides with people who've done it before.

don't do too many laps in your car.

enjoy it.

(I did ... had a fantastic time ... oh, there is one downside ... once you've got the bug for trackdays.... it'll be your undoing )

I know there are a couple more cause they're mates of mine and i'm sure there's a few more around here somewhere.

We might have even met somewhere along our twisty roads.

Hi there,

I cut my track teeth in a standard MY98 with weaker brakes than yours on an airfield with Easytrack... was great fun, and a good day was had by all. Do look after the brakes though - you get a lot of fade with the standard 2 pots and I'm guessing the standard 4's won't be too much better.

Enjoy!

Simon.
