P1Fanatic - thats one serious piece of kit, if thats carried then I hope you actually KNOW how to use it - if not, it will get used on YOU!!
I am one BIG bu99er - but I dont carry, if they do and I dont fancy my chances I will walk away - I can always find them another day on my terms
Martial Arts is fine for getting fit - but absolutely useless in a street fight!! anyone who has seen or been involved in street fights KNOW thats its DIRTY, biting, kicking, gouging eyes out - really nasty stuff. You stand there doing a Bruce Lee and within seconds you will be in casualty - believe me, a good street fighter will take out any black belt, dan, clan, wham bam whatever!

A lot of martial arts are now focused towards self defense. If its no good then how does that tiny little Gracie dude manage to use his Ju-Jitsu to take out everyone from boxers to sumo wrestlers to kickboxers, not just once but for 3-4 years in a row to win the world fighting championship that has no rules other than no biting or eye gouging. Any training is better than none but at the end of the day its aint worth risking your life unless you are forced to.
No Im not stupid enough to carry that knife - its part of my weapons from films collection - if youd seen Rambo III youd recognise it.
Simon.

Computer games aside that comment is of course complete b*ll****.
Some people are good at dealing with violent situations others are not, matial arts training obviously improves any ones ability in a violent situation how much just depends on the individual and how hard they train.

Does the Name "Boatsy" means any thing to you????
Then you will understand his capabilities in a ANY fight situation. yet His main skill is keeping out /away from a problem.
Yes a trained Judo expert will be great in a street fight, But If his "Ego " gets the better of him.. he/she could come unstuck....
Its not just the "ART", its also the "Experience" that counts

iv done a bit of Gracie Ju-Jitsu, but its the last fighting position i'll like to be in a street fight. if you train grappling in a gym you'll end up fighting the way you train and that is on the floor.
i do martial arts but we dont just do ***** fighting systems, we train some street fighting, knife work and multiple opponents (standing and on the floor)
IMO. a train martial artist could take on street thug.

ditto ray_li - in a street fight you want to do stand-up if poss, as it will rarely be 1 on 1, and yes experience does count for a lot.
remember, you only have to be 7 stone plus to stick a knife in someone. I once saw a good boxer get glassed by a right weedy ****** from behind......

Worse still, you could get shot by a 5 stone guy. Martial arts is just like weightlifting, different people have different classes and some people are morte gifted than others. Otherwise, we'll have too many Arnies or Bruce Lees in this world. The more you put into it, the more you get out of it.
Come to think of it, thats just like modifying your scoobs.

**** maglites etc, get a sword - how cool would that be
The 5 cars were stopped and we were requested to be searched and stuff. It was like one of those films where weapons just keep appearing. Along with a plethora of swords (obviously used from all the nicks and burrs (don't tell the MSS - we were going to file them first!)), daggers, maces and axes we had cross bows, long bows, pikes, bucklers and all sorts of arrows. Fortunately the police realised that we really had far too much junk to not be going to a Mediaeval Weekend and let us off.
