Its as much to do with a drop in natural test and gh production as it is with a lack of exercise once over 35

Why when someone wants to get fit, does everyone immediately give bodybuilding "advice?"

Yes weights are good but the bodybuilder look is rather silly in many eyes and not very versatile.

Run, cycle, swim, set goals, don't punish yourself for eating a Mars bar or drinking a beer but adjust the diet, don't guzzle stupid protein drinks. Just work hard, enjoy the gains in fitness because once you're there, maintenance is SO much easier.

Put your chest away Mattee

For the record I have been more than happy with the advice taken from here, and more specifically the too and fro FB message with Banny have helped me out no end.

I am in the best shape I have been in the last 15 years which is a great achievement for me as I have gone from being relatively active sole in my twenties to not doing very much physical (no bedroom punts please ).

I came on here at the beginning of the year asking for help, some will say advice, but I actually needed help as I had no idea on the best solution for me to get back into fitness, and you lot helped me, yes you all had input, some good some not so good, but at the end of the day it opened the doors for me.

When I realised I needed to do something I was nearing 15 stone, which for me wasn't too bad being almost 6'0" and mid 30's, however I was uncomfortable in myself, my trousers for work were tight at a 36" waist, I couldn't play outdoor games with the kids without being short of breath, in fact a quick run up the flight of stairs at work made me pant........

So that said I started walking to work (currently ceased due to daft working hours and kids being off school, but will return soon.) and shedded almost a stone with a balanced diet, I then turned the wick up and joined the gym and got my diet in even better order (maybe went to extreme at one point), but managed to see a 13.2 stone which made me very happy.

Around 2 months ago I introduced supplements to my diet simply due to the fact I were not getting enough Protein in my diet. I also take Vit D and a prework out juice, which actually bloody works!

I am currently more focussed on weights, and put cardio to the 2nd best but always ensure that I get a run in, crunches, and say 10 minutes on the spa bag.

I also go 6 weeks a time with diet strategy, so I do not even get fed up. So in any given 6 weeks I will happily eat and drink whatever I like albeit moderated, and the next 6 weeks are better controlled, ie no Beer, no sweets, no seriously bad foods like Mcds etc. I actually started my 6 week diet on Tuesday and I feel spot on, training hard 3 days on, 1 day off etc and I feel I have it all under control. The best bit is that I actually feel really good in myself although I am not where I would like to be yet going by the benchmarks I have set myself, but that all more the fun trying to get there, and then moving the goal posts

For interest I have found this a serious fat burner for myself, but I appreciate some people may struggle with it. Get on the Treadmill and warm up for 5 minutes jogging, then.............
Sprint for 1/4km at 100% (machine maxes at 20km for me which is doable)
Walk or jog for 1/4km
Sprint for 1/4km at 100%
Walk or jog for 1/4km
etc etc etc...............
Keep this gong for 4km and I will gurantee if you are not already fit, or a keen runner that you will be buggered in no time, your heart will race, calm, race and you'll see improvements in weeks!

Been there ran it, id really advise against it, stellar as it is od on the stuff and you wind up with a pretty severe case of death.

Running tta powder as part of my diet and i love the stuff, despite diet being on point my body still refuses to let go of much if any fat least at a reasonable rate.

This stuff has kicked it up a gear, i feel like im leaning out decently for a change and about time, it works by uncoupling the fatty acid bonds.

Does nothing for me personally, quite an unnatural look TBH.

I'm down to 12.5 stone from being at 16 stone in February/March just through eating healthily and regular excersize..

Greetings ladies and gentlemen.

3 months and no updates? You must all be busy making and eating mince pies

I've not had as much time on my hands lately as I would liked, so I've not managed too much cardio, plus I stupidly arranged a friendly football match at work to boost moral for my staff, however I got dragged into playing as my shift only had 11 men and I suffered a knee injury (suspect ACL), however after 2 months it's coming too now, and I'm hoping I don't need surgery. I'm just getting back into running, but suffering after around 2k

I'm now at 14 stone, however I've taken the lack of time, and knee complaint to go T&T at the gym, it cuts my gym time in half and I feel it's working very well. I feel more knackered than a regular workout but it's early days.

What about you guys?

Rob

Hey up Rob.
It's a bit of a bugger with the ACL. I'd swap the running with something less stressful on the knees like cycling.
I started back on the weights myself a couple of months ago. I was sick off feeling weak and lethargic, which is all I felt for the past year or so. This was post back surgery and subsequent dvt.
Anyhow since the first session I've felt great! The strength and lost muscle came back apace. Whilst I'll never be cleaning and jerking or dead lifting, I've gained size and strength using isolation exercises and a combination of light weight and high reps.
A lot the aches have gone and I feel much better. I'm setting myself a few targets so it's onwards and upwards.

I had a sports massage a couple of weeks ago; I had SO many knots it was actually quit painful but it's done the World of good.
And yes, she was rather attractive...

Been a bit knocked back with minor illness for a week but surfing tonnes and running a lot with some weights a couple of times a week; nothing major but it seems to be helping.

No, just more sedentary than you, as discussed limitations of BMI as before. Little time to exercise, all my colleagues are absent, I'm the only one left.

BMI is pretty lame; when I was doing more weights and got a bit heavy, I was "overweight" - errrrmmmm...

You're average high level rugby player will be "obese!"

The tricky ones that I have the lack of time to properly assess are the previously fit who have now let themselves go and are at serious risk but use the "BMI is rubbish" as an excuse, which clearly you are not (but watch yourself in future, especially after an injury). The obviously fit who are training and the sedentary are easier to interpret in 30 seconds.

I have always been classed as obese or very obese. Now I weigh 14st12lb have a flat stomach. Still classed as obese in the charts. I might one day get a proper fat ratio test. I have some techy goodies coming for Christmas so I can train with a strategy to improve my FTP. I haven't got a clue what it is., so will be interesting to get a base figure to work off. My interval and weight training has resulted in some encouraging improvement. Roll on next year

Yep I'm overweight according to the bmi calculator. 29.3 at a weight of 101 kg. Bmi doesn't take account of body composition.

Not quite lol. 6'1". I could do with perhaps sharpen in the midsection but I keep forgetting I'm neither young nor physically able as I once was.
I know you're not keen on bodybuilding but it was huge part of my life for years. At 18 I was six foot tall and weighed around ten stones. After four years of solid training I put on over five stones. I've been up to sixteen and a half stones and maintained good muscularity.
Nowadays I'm just thankful to be lifting again after all the issues I've had. I never thought I'd lift a weight again but the body's resilience is amazing. I put on a stone and a half and two inches on my arms in two months. I just hope I can maintain my routine.

Not anti body building at all; I stuck three stone on in two years thanks to obsessive gyming at Uni (trimmed a stone back off; it was making surfing and other sports harder to do!).

I just think there's a point where it becomes OTT.

I'm a big advocate of weights; gives you an edge in all sorts of sports if you approach it sensibly.

I guess I'm just not into lifting for the sake of it; I do it mostly to be better at other sports although the initial motivator was "my god I'm skinny; time to some that out."

So, I've been trying to shed another half stone to drop back into a 32" waist (almost there now) but I'm having difficulties in doing it, I'm eating healthy low to no fat, carbs are very very limited going to the gym three times a week and running 5-6K each time, so 15-18K a week in total, but I can't seem to shake that extra half stone, anyone any tips to get rid of it? And no liposuction isn't an option before some smart ar$e suggests it lol.

I am in the same position, struggling to get another 7lbs off. Cycling more often has helped to start the weight loss. More running and less gym sessions will help shift extra pounds

All I'm doing in the gym is the treadmill three times a week , I'm not really into weights and stuff. I was advised not to go running everyday as the body needs time to rest, should I go every day to get rid of the half stone?
