True: without taking a can-opener to the filters you cannot say which is better or worse. Bar cost. Sometimes even identical brand filters vary internally when they switch to a different supplier.

Anyhoo my list of non-Subaru filters in no particular order:

Unipart
Crossland
Blueprint
Mann

I've not took a can opener too any of them - couldn't be arsed But experience with the cartridge filters on other makes of cars generally shows they aren't bad in terms of filter media and construction.

Oil filters again..?

There is a search function and it has been discussed at length:

Interesting thread, worth a read.

Mazda RX8 oil filters for me. Made by the same manufacturer as the old subaru black ones (Roki) and have the same bypass pressure (which non of the k&n, blueprint etc do)
