Yep, that pretty much says it all

I owned a mapped 535D and it was balistic in a straight line and certainly capable of keeping up with a Scooby once rolling, however it was somewhat soulless.

It's uber efficiency, the very thing that made so good, was its downfall as it was just bland.

A 535d will only be able to keep up with lightly modded imprezas as bhp per ton they only have about 240'ish but they have about 500lbs of torque so can be nippy. I have a 530d and when I put my foot down I'm unimpressed although it has over 400lbs in standard form.

I've got a 335d sport remapped to 350bhp 520lbs/ft....From 80 to 150 it pulled away from a 2008 Audi RS4...Not by a lot but it did...To my friends surprise...

You're chucking out over 200lbs more torque than him and have a deficit of about 50 bhp (few RS4s make the claimed power). Furthermore you've got less transmission loss and probably less weight. Your victory should have been more comprehensive.

200lbs more torque or not , getting beaten by a diesel is embarrassing no matter what, and im pretty sure it was more than a little.

I'd have dusted him in the WRX Wagon PPP.

Perfect example of the "once your moving" aspect of any car, it's tricky trying to pass someone on country roads at 70/90mph coming into a bend no matter how much power you have, you may get passed but you'll not make the next bend.

Still a glorified reps car, can't imagine having one as a weekend toy tbh too "corporate" like driving around in a fancy office.

When I had my X5 remapped and the DPF removed it was pretty damn quick, even sounded pretty beastly as well (I believe there the same engine as the 535d)
Although it was a great car on the motorways and for picking up speed after 40mph I wouldn't say that diesels are performance cars, they accelerate well enough when there gong but there still pretty lame with high revs and they peak and drop off very quickly! No good off the line when your living your life racing around

Lulz
Totally different cars, drive totally differently. Granted, in a straight line a TDi has so much torque it can easily keep up with a 90s saloon but for driving pleasure, throttle response, noise, expanded torque band....
I still love driving my brothers 106 gti for all these reasons
I also drive a 330d but it doesn't compare to the Type R!!!!

Nah you've got it wrong, most of them think I want a car that's as fast and handles and sounds like that but I can't afford it.

Oh and same to you.

Well that's because you had the "Carlos Fandago" version, should have got a WRX Wagon PPP, much more subtle and under rated but better at the traffic light derby, easier to live with and better on fuel, win win win.

like it, i have been toying with the idea of a new age JDM STI recently, one of my mates over here want's to buy the wagon and I can't be arsed / don't have the time to do the full renovation on the type r that I want to do so was thinking maybe a JDM STI as a stop gap, I don't do many miles so suspension ect not a big issue, fancy some twin scroll short ratio action to get my fix.

I was actually thinking i'd use it for a couple of years then rape it for the engine ,box and twin scroll set up and stick them in the type r and run about 450bhp, then flog the rest to the WRX mugs, cheap way to 450bhp twin scroll Type r, but still keeping the short ratio aspect.

but the six speed box is rubbish and will make the car so slow, why not use your wrx ppp engine and box..........

Strangely I did have the idea of using the type r box in the wrx but never had time to do it, my main gripe with the UK 6 speed is the ratios are neither here nor there for a daily but as a weekend toy/track car the short JDM ratio's appeal to me, especially if they are similar to the type r's, but tbh it's a pipe dream for the foreseeable future.

You know how it is being a petrol head, the fumes colour your judgment.

The Impreza has had a chav boy racer image for years and i doubt it will shake it tbh. I have been considering buying another Subaru but it seems that the grown up thing would be to go for a hatch sti or nice Forester Sti which would appeal to me more as the are pretty rare and offer plenty of boot space for my Bullmastiff. As much as I love the earlier Imprezas and having owned them since 2001 I don't think I will be getting another due to the stigma attached to them.

Sorry but I think you misunderstand what I'm saying. The Impreza is a great car in standard trim, but too many owners expect to beat every car on the road which just won't happen against a quick modern car wether it's petrol or diesel. However if you mod your Impreza to say 450 to 500BHP nothing will pass you. My standard STI was great but now & then I'd have to let the odd M3 or similar go past me, since Iv had 460BHP Iv never had to let another car past. People need to realise that an Impreza badge alone won't beat newer cars with better handling & performance, technology has moved on that's all.
