He doesn't get shares and hasn't seen rise in basic pay for a number of years. I'v told him he should go else where and I think that is what he is going to do this year after he gets his bonus. What grinds him is that the government dictates what he should be paid rather than his manager just so they can score some cheap political points. As for being an employee as opposed to being self employed, there are pros and cons to both depending on your circumstances and the industry you work in.

Can you explain how it's anything to do with the government that your mate's employer has chosen to freeze his basic pay, and presumably also fail to promote him, for x number of years? Surely this must be either just down to his employer for being stingy, or to your mate, for not being good enough to earn a promotion?

Because he works for RBS - owned by the government, they can dictate.......

However, if he's on sub-40 he can't be any good or he would have left already

In order to be promoted, there needs to be a vacancy. If you hadn't already noticed RBS have been shedding staff since it was part nationalised.

Then he needs to look for a job elsewhere would be my response. He's not the only person in the UK that hasn 't had a payrise and at least he gets a bonus. My bonus is having an invoice paid in 7 days rather than 14.
